For me - £198 plus vat for ann ABS sensor down to £20 for a hub with ABS for the Almera. Nissan dealership (Mumfords in Plymouth) were brilliant. They confirmed that two cars out there (by reg no) had the same components. Whilst I was in the yard I also had three tyres from the car - one new, the other 2 very close to new.

Also, Renault 11. Needed new drums and bearings, £7 for the pair from a breakers from a car that had done 50K. My car was close to 100k at the time.

Staggering saving on my best example. Local trusted indy were close to fitting a new aircon compressor to my old Mondeo for £500... they seemed to have tried everything but it just wouldn't keep running. 30mins on the net and I found a guy from over Poland way who uploaded the trick to a forum (a forum with images which really helped his step by step guide!!).

Turned out that Ford sell a shim kit for a pound or two that enabled me to reduce the compressor clutch gap in under an hour... perfect and still fine 2yrs on.

I had bought a Citroen Xantia with nearly 12 months MOT from an auction.

It turned out that the numpties who had put it through the MOT hadn't spotted an unplugged ABS ECU. This was starting to look expensive when it was coming up for its next MOT.

Was looking at c £500 for a new one, or £250 for a recon.

Breakers yard further down in cornwall had one for £60 + £10 delivered!

It's nice when that happens... in another place, I passed on a tip about soldering up an Astra diesel control unit. Saves £££.

I was given a Pug 309 SRi by my dad a few years ago.

When I got it home I noticed that the central locking had packed in.

I located the central locking control unit, not a particularly sophisticated piece of kit, and found a copper strip that looked like it should have been soldered to a post, but wasn't. So I borrowed a soldering iron and stuck it back.

That worked until such time as the car got written off.
