Wired Security Cams -> Wireless Useless - zippy
So after someone tried to break in last night, I am after some wired security cameras.

We have wireless ones, and our neighbours have doorbell cams.

All useless.

Scrote used some device to knock them off off line as he came up the drive.

I was in the lounge at the time - about 2:00AM and heard someone trying to get in to the garage.

Went down stairs and turned the lights on to see someone fleeing.

Called police and got a crime ref!

Looking for something I can fit myself ideally - any ideas please?

No idea on wired cameras but it'd be interesting to know how the wireless stuff was knocked out.

Same here.

Went to neighbours x 3 and can see on the videos that each house went out one by one as he came up the drive - see him in the distance fiddling with a small device then the signal is lost.

On wired cameras Screwfix seem to have some options but I guess you're looking for recommendations.

Some wireless ones back up to a local SD card or similar.

You can't easily see our house from the road - it's some 20meters back from the road and 3 meters higher and there is a "mini" wood in between.

We have the worst garage doors in the close. They are the only ones that are wooden and need replacing. We have a trusted contractor (friend) with us who is doing some work in the garage for us in the garage and his tools are there over night.

The intention is to replace the garage doors with a more elegant solution that will allow a lot more light in and be more secure.

We do have a lot of delivery vans going up and down for our small close and wonder if someone saw him working?

Guess you have motion lights outside?

I just put some stuff on my Home Assistant that in the event of an intrusion slow-flashes the house lights (hall, landing, lounge, kitchen) as well as does some other stuff (sets off mini-sirens, sends messages etc) which hopefully will cause anyone to turn tail once it kicks off. Not as good as a proper alarm system though.

Also interested in how he disabled the cameras - what did you have to do to recover them?

2.4Ghz portable signal jammer/disrupter (they are a thing)

Indeed they are, you can get a kit with spectrum analyser and kill 5ghz wifi as well if thats in use. And kill your mobile phone. about 300 quid.

Re-boot the router then the cameras (remove battery, re-insert battery).

>> Motion sense...

On the camera. It's a "Blink" thing.

Ours are Hikvision PoE and look like this.

www.use-ip.co.uk/hikvision-ds-2cd2347g2-lu-4mm-clearance.html

connected to

cctvdirectonline.co.uk/8mp-ds-7604ni-k14pc-hikvision-poe---4-channel-nvr-1534-p.asp

No idea how it works but the they are obvs cabled, they go to a switch where the HDR is. Two front, two rear, the lights come on if they need more light to see.

I got the electricians to put it in while we were building. Don't know what it cost, I had some other stuff on the bill.

I can see what's happening via the Hikvision app.

The Chinese are collecting all the pictures of course:)

You are going to need a pro. Lot of cabling, custom cabling lengths so stripping/termination tools, switch or hub set up/install .

Not really my area of expertise (the last encounter I had with security cameras was when I built a datacentre over 30 years ago ;-) ) but I believe you can get wireless cameras that will also record locally (on an inserted SDcard) and the latter I would assume would be unaffected by WiFi jamming.

You'd lose any internal real-time monitoring, but still have access to evidence.

Don't wish to worry you, but they may come back. Could you have been targeted for the tools?

I have the Blink cameras. Record locally to an SD stick but the connection between the cages and the USB hub is WiFi!

Back when I worked in the charity shops I installed Swann CcTv setups. Very simple. Cameras and cables to a HD recorder. Can view on an app but the actual recording is not done via WiFi.

Swann (& other wired systems) fall down with the amount of cabling - data & power that has to be run.

In shops & offices there is often suspended ceilings where cables can be run + hidden with minimal effort.

My Texas son owns a 5 year old house. The house has internal & external cameras + alarm system - the wiring was a standard fitting by the builder. Likewise internally there is cat6 wiring/outlets in throughout the house.

I have 4 of these devices working and they have appeared reliable over the last 18 months. (i use in wiFi mode). If you add inbuilt mem card they continue to work and record even if they go offline (wifi). The last pair cost me £40 on Amazon special promotion.

You can also use windows software or independent android app software to monitor.

I have found Tapo devices well supported and easy to set up with good app software. I also have some sockets and robot vacuum from the same manufacturer.

The manufacturer also provides a subscription cloud backup if you wish.

I have a pair of those which I got for under £50 a year or so back. Not got round to installing them yet, so I expect the warranty has run out! They are still shrink wrapped...

I thought modern systems would use power over ethernet (POE) to cut down on cabling - only one wire required to each camera?

UK houses need better wiring but the cost is an issue. Still smarting at the £600 odd to fit an extractor fan and £1200 quote to upgrade our consumer unit.

Its fine having memory cards in cameras, but if your wifi is blocked you get no real time monitoring or alarm. A memory card is all "after the event has been discovered" technology.

Its surprising how many people spend a fortune on alarms and security systems but have very poor physical security. Install decent locks, doors, window locks, lighting etc before you do anything else.

Wifi Blocked...

I have been told by the neighbourhood bobby, that the wifi was probably "de-authenticated" by something like this:

flipperzero.one/

Legal to own, but not use for nefarious purposes.

I suspect a cheaper version of this type of device that just "de-authenticates" the wifi without all the hacking extras.

The best way is not to spend a fortune on the house, make it look like a right slum, and the tealeaves just walk on by to richer pickings......
