 ssvagent.exe - L'escargot
When I open Internet Explorer I get a popup window which asks "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer". To play safe I click on "no".

The programme is ssvagent.exe.

I think I've been fiddling to have arrived at this situation. What's the solution?

It's OK. I've found the solution. I've gone into Tools> Manage add-ons> and I've disabled Java Plug-in SSV Helper. I'd enabled it previously when I'd been looking for a solution as to why some sites tell me I haven't got Java enabled in my browser. So I still haven't found the solution to that one.

Had the same issue with my laptop recently (Vista, running IE8)

Did the same as you following a google for some clues.
