 email addresses - L'escargot
I was given a business email address over the phone in which the employee insisted that each of the four words which were before the @ had a capital letter at the beginning. (The four words were, of course, all joined up.) I subsequently sent them an email with the address in that form. I've now seen the email address on the company's website and it contained no capital letters at all. Do capital letters where there shouldn't be any invalidate an email address?

Mods ~ sorry if I should have put this in the Computer Related section.

Wot the man says. The address part is non case dependant ie john.smith@madeupaddress.com but one can use a display name that uses capitals as normal, ie John Smith

In some mail programs you'd see
John Smith in the address

Thanks. Phew!

Technically the bit before the domain e.g before the @ is case sensitive, but in reality email servers are setup to treat the addresses as exactly the same so it won't make any difference.

Thar's certainly been my experience = not case sensitive before the @

In that case I'm pleased I used the capital letters. The employee was quite emphatic that the four letters should be capitals. I haven't received the acknowledgement of receipt yet that I requested. I'll give it until about next Wednesday, then re-send the email without the capitals.

I don't know any case of it actually being a problem I think it is a legacy of the fact that email systems are usually unix based and unix is case sensitive unlike windows based systems.

It would have probably bounced back by now if it was wrong :).

It's not so much a legacy Unix problem but SMTP.

Wasn't there a snail mail option ?

Seriously send yourself an e-mail mixing cases and see if it works !

As Rob says, send an email and you will find it works. Because most (probably all) mail systems are set to ignore case in email addresses. The bit after the @ and any other fully qualified domain name (FQDN) has always been case insensitive... i.e. any host on the Internet.

I did, and it works. I'm just baffled as to why I was specifically instructed to use capitals in the email address mentioned in my original post.
