 Problem key on new laptop - Meldrew
Got a nice new Toshiba laptop for Christmas. It came from John Lewis and has 2 year's support and warranty. Already one of the keyboard keys has gone a little strange. Basically it is a little harder to press than any of the the others, slightly spongy, and it makes a slight clicking noise when pressed which none of the others do. It is working OK, now, but I am wondering if it worth taking it straight back for repair or rectification. Any thoughts please?

It may be a crumb stuck under the key.

Turn the laptop off (hard disks don't like being man handled).

Turn the laptop upside down and shake gently. That should move the obstruction.

If it doesn't then take it back. JL customer service should be good.

Hopefully you will be able to sort it out yourself, but worse case scenario a new keyboard shouldn't be any more than £45 including labour although this should be covered under warranty.

Thanks all. I am now thinking that some other keys are a bit odd, clicking and feeling a bit different. I shall keep using it and then go back to JL if I need to. I am wondering if using a vacuum cleaner might be a better bet than shaking it.

I find a blast from a can of compressed air works well in dislodging keyboard crumbs.

I bought my father-in-law a Toshiba laptop. Its keyboard packed up just few months after the 1-yr warranty.

Since yours is under warranty, I suggest you get it repaired/replaced.

Thanks - JL Here I come. I am a bit hard of hearing but the problems key feels odd and makes a clicking noise that the others don't
