 XP problem - Hard Cheese
One of the kids PC's running XP Pro SP3:

"Windows could not start because of the following file is missing or corrupt:
C:windowssystem32configsystem
You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD, select 'R' at the first screen to start repair."

I have attempted a repair and tried to copy the C:windowssystem32configsystem.bak file though the system cannot find it, perhaps it is also corrupt.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

EDIT: Why are my back slashes deleted?

Thanks Z, actually that reminds me, I have come across the point that you have to select Set Up rather than the Recovery Console to make a repair before though it had slipped my mind.

I will give it a go.

A single \ is going to be interpreted as a quote. So to have two \\ you double (so two for each one displayed). That's my thoughts anyway.

When you edit one of them will have not been displayed so when you save the changes it will remove another.

No luck, after screen 6 I got a different screen 7 asking me which partition I wanted to install Windows on then a warning that all data would be lost etc, no repair option.

However I booted into the diagnostics and got 0F00:075D and 0F00:0224 errors, hard disk failure it seems, I will put the disk in another system and see if I can get the data off, there is not much on there of any value anyway.

I put the drive in another system as a secondary drive and extracted all data without any problems, I also replaced the C: windows system32 config system file with the system.bak file and Windows then booted when it was reinstalled in the original computer though other errors appeared.

The error messages indicate that the drive is faulty though it ran fine as a secondary drive. Nevertheless I will replace it.

now you`ve got it booting try running chkdsk from "run" in the start menu.

Got enough error messages already, it's toast ...

sounds that way, soon as you get moving errors its time to bin it.
