That really is amazing - just shows how much power (processing and memory) a hand held device has got these days.

EDIT: assuming it's not a hoax... is it?

Sorry, I can see lots of other SIRI videos on youtube, so no it's not.

No it's not a hoax. She is quite extraordinary (I think she's a he in the UK, actually.) I have seen her in action and she's even talked to me and done my bidding.

Yes, unfortunately. Since the OS5 update the voice changed to a mans in the UK, which doesn't sound as polite and friendly as the womans voice did, IMHO.

It doesn't do the processing on the phone - it is done on Apple's servers in the data centre. The phone bit records what you say and send it to Apple for processing and you get the result sent back. So it won't work without a data connection and may struggle a little over 2G networks.

And in the UK it is a man's voice:

Ah, I did wonder about that after posting.

Sill, pretty clever software (on the servers I mean).

And none of the stuff like "there's a chinese restaurant near you" works in the UK (yet) either.

The speed which the demo in the video above responds suggests it either doesn't send too much data or that was when there was a good/fast Internet connection.

If it didn't respond quickly then the feature is only a gimmick and wouldn't be used much.

As both the voice recognition and composition of the response are performed centrally, it must be sending compressed speech in both directions. Therefore the latter.

I doubt it's up to much on a 2G connection.

Q "Siri, where were you made?"
A "Like it says on the box, I was designed by Apple in California."

Correct answer: "My construction was farmed out to the cheapest bidder in China with a stunning record of human rights abuses. But I'm still the most expensive phone in the market."

Siri is not made in China. Siri is some software on the phone and a backend service running on Apple servers in their data centres. So it is not 'made' in China. :-) So it is probably correct to say Siri was designed in California.

If the question was where was the phone made then your answer is correct. But that wasn't the question.
