Microsoft Money - cheap, simple alternative ? - Dulwich Estate
To manage our meagre portfolio of savings: Isas, a few shares and savings bonds I've been using Microsoft Money 95 since it came out and simply transferred it from computer to new computer over the years. I now have Windows 7 and Microsoft don't support it on that platform.

It works fine on XP and I've learned that I can spend about £100+ to upgrade Windows 7 to get an XP emulating prog - no chance at that price ! ! So at the moment, our money is being managed on an old laptop still running XP.

I really want something very simple. I don't need any on-line links as I'm more comfortable with manual updating anyway. I have toyed with knocking-up a few Excel sheets ( one per account) with a final summation sheet. But surely there's a simple thing out there somewhere - but I can't find it.

Is there something simple out there I can download for free ? I'll even pay a few, very few, quid if need be.

If it were me, it would be Excel as you described!
However, you can download the final (SUNSET) version of money here, for free, and it claims to be Win7 compliant.

I use www.moneyextra.com to keep my portfolio up to date. Far better than Microsoft Money as your share values are updated automatically each day. Of course it's no good for keeping track of banking.

I've no experience of that app. does the above statement mean it will not load on a Win7 machine or just will not run ?
If it installs have you tried changing the properties in the Compatibility tab ?

gmac, I'm not an ace at computer speak and it has been clearly revealed.

Put simply, Microsoft Money 95 will not install and my version of Win 7 does not allow compatibility with XP. I've poked around the internet and it seems my experience is well known.

Zero,

I've downloaded the Sunset version and, well blow me down, it looks just like a newer, more feature packed version of my old MM95. The accompanying notes say "unfortunately" there is no internet link with it now - ideal ! Give me a while to trawl through it, but so far it looks to be pretty much what I want.

The instruction videos show the $ symbol which I wondered if I could stomach - but when I open mine it happily shows £ - even better.

Sir, I am indebted to you and a virtual pint or two to you.

Glad it's sorted, just for the sake of future site searches:-

It's true that only fancy versions of Win 7 have the ability to act exactly like XP, by having a virtual XP machine running within Win 7, however all Win 7 flavours (possibly with the exception of starter) have the ability to run programs in 'compatibility mode' for various earlier versions of Windows.

Store the program you want to run on the desktop, then right click on it and select 'properties' from the menu. Click on the 'compatibility' tab that should appear, then you can select what version of Windows to run as, and the ability to run as Administrator, which sometimes helps.

But Alas, it does not allow ALL windows XP compatible applications to function, and singularly fails to do the biz for most pre windows XP applications.

I did think allowing compatability options back to Win 95 was a bit optimistic....Still, at least it's easy and quick to try.

Thanks, I'll give that a go too.

Why oh why do the two biggest and best know names in the business of software/computing - Microsoft and Apple make everything just a little out of the ordinary so darned difficult. This is but one example affecting me. The other: I eventually got all my iTunes stuff onto the new computer and synched with my iPod - it only (!!!) took a couple of days to succeed after much web searching and subsequent failures. Grrr...

It can be done though - Win 7 happily lets me use Word 97 - who needs more ?

I prefer Word 2002, as it has WYSIWYG font selection, unlike 97, but that's about the only reason I didn't stick with '97.

Annoyngly for me, the one program I can't get to work on my Win7 (32 bit) machine is VideoRedo, which was the main application I bought the new machine for grrrr.....

I'm still using Money 2002 (Australian version bought in Middle East, legally) and I'm using it on Win7 64 bits desktop and laptop. Had to right-click on desktop icon and run "Troubleshoot compatability", and then run it in administrator mode. Need to disable the Money Express option.

Internet updates still work, also up-to-date currency versions.

Timely link there Roger, I've been loking for something just like that to replace Quicken which is no longer supported in the UK.

I have had no problems running MS Money on Windows 7...I don't recall having to do anything special when I installed it.

Many Windows applications will run on later versions of Windows despite no official compatibility, for instance I have Photoshop CS2 on Windows 7 64bit with no problems.
