I have abandoned Google for searching - Mapmaker
Well I have. It's Bing for me now, even if it's not as "good". Bing maps give you OS maps, Google don't.

The instant results preview feature of google drives me crazy. It's SO slow I can feel my blood pressure rising as I wait sometimes as much as a minute before the screen unfreezes, never less than 10 seconds.

And then there's the unbelievable frustration of the preview when it brings up the site you want... only to snatch it away as it decides that you didn't want it after all.

Use "Google" for your searches - as its better! but why not just "bookmark" Bing Maps so that you can instantly get them up when you want them? - Simples! ;-)

Seems easier to get UK-only results on Bing.

I've been Binging for over a year now, hardly ever use Google at all at all.

Tried both, found bing to be pretty lacking in most departments, so stick with google.

Dont have any of the problems reported by mappy.

Do you not have the preview function?

Imagine you are typing

white car large boot roofrack

At about the r of large, the hit you want comes up... but you are still typing so the hit you want has disappeared.

It also seems to switch to and fro from the google page. If you type into the googlebar you can never predict whether or not it's going to let you go back to the search or whether you have to start all over again.

Mine doesent

Its perfectly predictable and consistent here.

As I said I have NONE of the problems you have - yours may be a local issue.

* and as I type the rest of your phrase, the hits I do want are coming up, and I have ended up - quickly - with a page of pertinent hits.

So if a local issue, what's causing it?

You can turn off the 'autocomplete' facility from options (the cog wheel thingy next to 'sign in' top right of the page).

Bing Maps are much better though. At least twice postcode searches on Google Maps have placed major sites several streets from their trus locations. One was the HQ of a large Govt placed round the back of Whitehall instead of in Victoria Street. Not good; I was directing a disabled driver there. As I know the area the mistake was glaringly obvious but it also sent be two blocks off finding the SnoDome in MK.

Thanks, Brompton. Unfortunately it doesn't help.

The whole of Explorer just grinds to a halt with Google.

You made me think. With Firefox, however, it seems to work fine. Maybe I need to change default browser... or indeed maybe it's a clever way to make us use Chrome.

PS which large Govt is placed round the back of Whitehall? ;)

Mapmaker - are (or were) you using google.com rather than google.co.uk?

Nothing to do with google maps

For many organisations, including mine (large 3 letter IT company) the postcode of many of our locations is just that, the code where the post is collected, the actual location is often hundreds of yards or even a few miles away, postcodes only really work as navigation aids for individual addresses.

Your browser. What browser / version is it?

Sounds to me like a symptom from the rest of your computer being slow, you really need a reload.

IE 8.0.6001.18702IC

and your operating system?

No idea... how do I find out?

what does the splash screen say when it boots up?

Xp? Vista? Windows 7?

If I press CTRL ALT DEL it says it is XP professional.

Figures, thats why you are running IE8, (9 is not supported on XP)

Anyway, IE8 is a huge pile of poo (I dumped it) and almost entirely responsible for your issues,.

It needs to be reinstalled.

"IE8 is a huge pile of poo (I dumped it)..."

Er... this could have been phrased a bit better.

Google bar removed. All running properly now... (though intriguingly there is another google search box in the toolbar which seems to work fine).

Google is messing me about too.
Every time I try a search I get the results up for a second or two and then the page immediately reloads with Google's search page!
Now using Scroogle!

Found the problem - the add-on "Optimize Google" had thrown a wobbler when it was updated. Now patched by the add-on's creator and F.F. 7.0.1 is back to Google searching correctly.
BTW - I find Bing to be not to my taste.
Scroogle is good in many ways for ordinary searching as it "scrapes" Googles results and then removes all Google's tracking and adverts before presenting the search results. It's quick, too.
It can offer secure https searching, too and is able to be set to UK specific searching.
