Simple question - is an ethernet port the same as a LAN socket?

A lan socket is normally in the wall, integrated wiring (infrastructure) that *is* the lan.
the port is the socket in your laptop / pc
An ethernet cable connects your ethernet port to the lan socket.
of course we dont know the context involved here - it would help.

Right. Please bear in mind that I am not at all 'techy' so what I am about to say may not make the slightest sense.
I have an iPhone on Vodafone and, because I live in an old house with thick walls, reception at home is virtually non-existent. So, I have got a box of gubbins called a Vodafone Sure Signal. It connects to our broadband router and boosts the mobile phone signal.
The instructions say to connect the SS box with the supplied cable to a spare ethernet port on the router. The only spare sockets on the router are all labelled 'LAN'. Hence my question :-)

In this case Port and Lan are the same.
Plug your SS box into the spare "lan port"

As Zero says plug it in. You then need to 'register' the Sure Signal box with Vodafone. Do post how you get on...

Hmmmmm. I've done that, but the box won't configure.

You have registered/activated it with Vodafone after plugging it in?

That's all right then, just plug it in. From personal experience it can take the Sure Signal anything from 15 mins. to several hours to get itself integrated into the network, after it's been activated.

In that case, I'll leave it overnight and see what the state of play is on the morrow.
rtj70 - yup. I did that before I plugged it in. Showing on the Vodafone website as 'registered'.

All sorted now. Box configured, mobile reception gained. Sadly this now means that Mrs B can get hold of me on my days off with requests to undertake 'vital' tasks...
