I'm getting peed orf with windows live mail via windows 7, so I've just set up Mozilla Thunderbird,

I sent myself a test email (just one!) and it downloaded 432 of the critters - is that normal?

You mean it downloaded 432 copies of the same email. Or 432 emails? If the latter I can believe that - if you haven't set your other mail client to delete the downloaded mails immediately.

Thunderbird downloaded all the emails that I've received on windows live mail over the last 3 or so months,

No arm done though ;}
