 Pre-installed anti-virus vs. Microsoft offerings - JohnM{P}
Am trying to setup for a friend a new laptop which has anti-virus/firewall already installed (McAfee). I was going to install Microsoft Security Essentials (or AVG) and turn on the Windows firewall but Windows7 seems to be insistent that McAfee is controlling security.
So, Questions are:
Should I just get friend to cough up for McAfee?
If not, what is the sequence of installs, enabling and removal, to replace it?
(Off-line de-install McAfee, on line enable Windows firewall, install MSE or AVG?)
Thanks!

Mcafee (which you are wise to get rid of) should be uninstalled. This can be done via control panel, add/remove programes, then download and install MSE. Use the windows firewall.

All this is safe to be done as long as you dont visit any other web sites than MS, and you are using a broadband router with a firewall.

Just had the same issue with Norton on a friends new HP laptop. Download Microsoft Security Essentials set-up file to desktop then uninstall McAfee from add/remove components in Control Panel. Reboot and install the wonderful Security Essentials.
