I want to stream music and photos from my mac upstairs to my TV downstairs. Looking at Apple TV. Is this the best way to go?

For you it is probably the simplest solution for sure. Providing the files are in the right format on the Mac then this will be very easy to setup.
The Apple TV is an iOS device (like iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad) and might not support all the CODECs and containers for video files that you have on the Mac. It is possible to 'jailbreak' the AppleTV and then install additional software like Boxee - I think the second generation AppleTV is supported.

Thanks. Think I'll go down that route. Not really too interested in video - Basically photos and music but thanks for the info' just the same.

Using AirPlay you could also stream media from an iPhone etc to the AppleTV. Not really looked into it.
The current Apple TV v2 is very small. A bit like a square hockey puck. A lot smaller than the original Apple TV. But that was a lot more expensive and potentially versatile.

Bought an apple tv this afternoon. Very easy to set up like most apple kit. Does what I want i.e. stream photos and music from itunes to the tv very well. My problem is that the computer is upstairs in a small room. Great for editing photos and listening to music but not so good for sharing the same .
The apple tv certainly seems to be the answer. Not sure I will be downloading many videos from itunes as normally rent DVDs from LOVE but will give it go
