iPod and new computer - hobby
I hope this makes sense... I'm used to MP3 players but for some reason known only to herself my youngest bought SWMBO an iPod... So we downloaded iTunes and then had all sorts of fun getting the thing synchronised...

Then disaster, the computer got a bug and is now u/s...

So we've bought a new one and, again, downloaded iTunes...

Now when we come to sync it says it will wipe everything off the iPod as there is no file (wrong word I think!) on the computer...

Is there any way that you can transfer all the songs off the iPod onto the new computer in iTunes into a new file?!

Its an ordinary PC running XP btw...

(I really wish we hadn't bought the damn thing, give me windows media player any day!)

There is third party software which claims to do this.

Either paid for or a free trial.

Google 'iPod transfer to PC', click on a few links and see if any takes your fancy.

For what it's worth, when I mentioned this to the Apple shop when I bought the Mac, I was told something like: "There's no official way to transfer files, but you may find other software to do it."

Someone will come along and hopefully tell you how to do it for free. I could use Google to find the answer for you but you could do that anyway.

In future, this is one reason not to purchase music via iTunes in my opinion (get the music DRM free from a place like Amazon, Tesco, etc.). More importantly, had you backed up the music files on the old PC you could have had the music on the new PC and just done a sync.

Music purchased form Itunes is DRM free

Depends on when, and how much, you paid for them.

You will need to authorise your new Itunes with the Itunes account that bought the tracks, then you should be able to synch your music into Itunes from the IPOD.

Cheers folks... stupid system though at least with MP3s you can do it the other way round... For the record, none of the tracks are downloaded, just transferred off CDs... Just she's got several hundred on it...

Load them off your backup?

If he had a backup he wouldnt be asking the question, would he.

No but worst case scenario he has the CDs to rip again.

All several hundred of them.

I use Mediamonkey to transfer music between Spamette Major's iPod and a PC and vice-versa, to avoid the scenario where the iPod gets wiped:-
