I am sorting out and tagging my Digital music. All 50k songs of them.
Anyone got a recommendation for a *free* duplicate song finder (using the meta tags)?

see you next Christmas then!!
Not just go into itunes, sort by song and then delete all duplicates?
As you know by now, that willl be the limit of my suggestions in the computer forum :)

which is why I want a tool!

www.beatunes.com/itunes-library-inspection.html
Trial version, not sure whether it's limited functionality, but seemed pretty good when I was doing similar earlier in the year.
|
Oops, limited functionality, but still might help:
Is beaTunes freeware?
No. beaTunes is shareware.
After the free trial period you will have to purchase a license, if you want to continue using beaTunes. You also need a license to apply solutions to issues found by the inspection facility.
Is the free trial somehow limited?
Yes. In two ways: time and functionality.
The trial version will expire after 2 weeks.
You can use the inspection feature to find issues, but you cannot apply one-click solutions.
Both limitations are lifted once you purchased a license.

Of course, you know you can show duplicates in iTunes then sort on (say) time then manually delete...? (Somewhere under File menu IIRC)
And here's an Open Source one - not used it but let me know if it works... sourceforge.net/projects/itunesdsm/

It looks like it might, however you have to pay 20 bucks to find out. But it looks like good value for money so I might.

There's a freeware version.

Would Copernic desktop search do the job? Don't know what Meta tags are, sorry.
|
The freebie version of MediaMonkey will organise a big bunch of files into folders based on the ID3 tags, that's what I use it for. I suppose this should find duplicates by default anyway.

I use this for finding and deleting duplicate files, and the free version works fine.
There is a wizard to search for music files too.

Morning Pat,
I just downloaded easy duplicate finder and what a job it did until I tried to remove the duplicates and then it demanded I register/upgrade? Is there a cost attached to this do you know?
Best regards,
Martin.

I've just updated my version and it will let me delete files Martin but I downloaded it from here
download.cnet.com/Easy-Duplicate-Finder/3000-2248_4-10692636.html
It states that you are allowed 10 goes before you have to pay for it.
If I click on the 'About' tab at the top a box comes up with this in it.
Product Key: 31BE733B53E8DAB0F319BE2C49ABFFCB
You could try copying and pasting that into the activation box.
I presume this is the key that comes with the free version as I have certainly never paid for it.
Hope this helps.

Ah thanks Pat, I see that now has a new feature to search the Tags on the music files. I will check it out.
|
Hope you can suss it out Zero, I can't work out why I was able to download a free version a couple of years ago and get updates, but Martin couldn't today.

Good Evening Pat,
I have just got in from work and may try later, but MIL is in a bad way (88 yo) and things are a bit up in the air here at the moment.
Best regards...................Martin.
|
Sorry to hear that Martin, but maybe best wait and see how Zero got on with getting it to work without paying.
I have had it for a couple of years now and it appears I have used my set amount of free goes!

Didn't use it in the end guys. I catalogued it all using MP3Tag and used Itunes to find the duplicates.
6,500 (30mb) of duplicates located.
Music now all sorted, tagged and catalogued.
36,925 tracks - 151 mb,.
|
yes them
the Gigabyte things 150 of them
|
Fitting over 36000 tracks on a mini CD (155Mb) would require the tracks to be well compressed. Talk about low quality audio. ;-)
