I could use a portable printer which is capable of churning out the occasional short document.
Just words and spaces, no need for pics or colour.
Is there such a device?

Yes. For example:
www.canon.co.uk/For%5FHome/Product%5FFinder/Printers/Inkjet/PIXMA%5FiP100%5Fwith%5Fbattery/
www.amazon.co.uk/Officejet-Battery-Powered-Printer-Notebooks/dp/B0019D999A/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1288699371&sr=8-10
But that is not cheap.

But it only prints on A6 paper.
Iffy, do you really need true portability? You could get a cheap printer and leave it in the boot of the car and run it via an inverter.

About six inches, but I don't use it as a rule.

I would have thought you used metric, it always sounds so much bigger.
