Since I allowed Microsoft to do an update on my PC I am unable to manipulate photos and would welcome some advice.
Briefly, the actual pictures do not appear in files as they used to do. Only icons are shown and I have to click on the icon to see the actual picture. I am unable to reduce the size of the photo so that I can send it by email. When I open a programme to reduce the size the file is not recognised.

Not sure about the being unable to resize issue, but the displaying of icons is possibly/probably due to the folder view options.
Once you've opened the folder in which the photos are stored, click the "view" option on the menu ribbon.
Then "Options", and then "Change Folder and Search Options".
In the resulting window, click "view" and if the setting "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is checked, uncheck it and apply.
Any icons should be replaced by thumbnails.
This is Win10, Win11 is likely to be very similar.
It's also worth checking that the folder in which the pictures are stored is optimised for pictures. Right-click the folder, Properties, Customise, and ensure that "Optimise this folder for" is set to pictures.

Thanks for your help; it worked.
I have no idea how the show icons was there as I have never changed anything. It has only happened since Microsoft "set up" my PC a few weeks before they ended support for W 10.
I have also lost hundreds of photos after I foolishly paid Microsoft for OneDrive which caused problems, so didn't renew my subscription. I have then lost all of my photos that I downloaded from my Canon camera.

I hate Onedrive with a vengeance, but are you sure you've lost (all) your contents?
Even without a subscription I believe you keep a certain amount of storage (5GB?) available.
If you still remember the associated Username and Password, it might be worth checking whether anything is still stored, by using the web interface.
www.microsoft.com/en-gb/microsoft-365/onedrive/online-cloud-storage
...and signing in.
If anything is available, contents can be downloaded from there to your PC (they come in Zip format).

Sometimes there is also a local OneDrive folder where your stuff in the cloud syncs to/from. But even if you had one the pics may by now have been sync'd out. Worth a look though

If you have opened the photo with MS Photo (either 'Open' or 'Open with'), you can click on the three dots to re-size the image.
