Windows 11 upgrade to latest version - Falkirk Bairn
Cumulative Upgrade to Win 11 came up on my laptop - LG Gram
Thought nothing about it as this occurs quite often - went ahead with the upgrade - downloaded and started the install only for it to hang at 81%.

My laptop still worked BUT "was not 100%". I thought a patch/new release would come to fix matters.

Yesterday, 4 days had passed, still nothing so I logged on to MS at 6am - 47th in the queue but 30 minutes later I had a web chat with Joyce. She was convinced the upgrade was fine BUT there was something stopping the install - probably the likes of McAfee. I do not have McAfee.

She admitted she was not technical but would transfer me to a techie to get it sorted. No transfer took place and silence, no call back.

Today I thought that I might try and look at anti-virus software on my PC. I use Malwarebytes and there was, to my surprise, a long forgotten AVG. Deleted AVG as I never recall using it in it the last 3/4 years.

Windows upgrade sprung to life - quick download, installing and hung at 81%, same as last time, for the best part of 5 minutes - then raced to 100%.

The system then re-booted 2/3 times and BINGO the installtion had worked.

Just in case anyone else suffers the same trouble Look at your anti-virus installation.
Thanks "Non- Technical Joyce" 10/10 wherever you are.

The Free MS Technical Support for upgrade failures 0/10 - AWOL.

I suppose I'm not surprised that free support on a free product might be patchy.

There is a wealth of info on the internet, not least the Microsoft document "Troubleshoot problems updating Windows" which suggests in Advanced "Temporarily remove third-party security software support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/troubleshoot-problems-updating-windows-188c2b0f-10a7-d72f-65b8-32d177eb136c

I had trawled the internet for a good few hours over 4 days. I had read many a MS article + others users and "snake oil sellers" but I did not know of the anti-virus link.

I found nothing that looked like my problem - lots of other issues on Win11 Home upgrades in the last few years but not my 8th April 2025 upgrade problem and possible anti-virus issues.

Hence my post just in case some other C4P members come across the same issue in the near future.

The thread about Win 10 prompted me to look at my laptop.
Under updates, I seem to have an option to "To see if this PC can run Windows 11, check the hardware requirements or visit your PC manufacturer's website."
When I click on this it then gives me my technical stuff with a blue button "Get Windows 11"

This is about the level of my computer knowledge - should I be going ahead and pressing that button?

I pretty much use my laptop for files like my monthly spreadsheets and occasional web browser.
Not sure what I will gain by upgrading?

Think my MS Office I am running is still 2013 and it does everything I need?

And support for Office 2013 ended two years ago, so you have not been receiving any security updates since then. Your choice as to whether this is important to you or not.

Is that the one where a paperclip pops up from time to time and delivers you hints on how to write your text in Chaucerian prose?

I think that was earlier remember it around 1999/Y2K.

There was also a dog that looked like it was doing a poo in the corner of the screen.

If you already own Microsoft Office, be aware that it might not install on a new computer — it depends on the type of licence you have. In that case, upgrading your existing PC to Windows 11 might actually be the better option.

I personally subscribe to Microsoft 365, mainly because I like having Word on my smartphone for reading certain documents. That said, most people probably don’t need it.

If you only use Word occasionally, it might be worth switching to Google Docs, which is completely free. My first choice is still Word, but I find the subscription model frustrating. It feels like renting software rather than owning it.

Google Docs runs entirely online, so there’s no licence to worry about, and you’ll never have to buy or renew anything just to keep using it.
