 USB memory issue? - Bobby
Downloading a zip file for a map update for my BMW. Have unzipped and extracted it - size 14GB.

Trying to copy it onto a FAT formatted 32GB USB and keep getting the error message that the file size is too big for the destination.

The USB is definitely empty and a right click on it tells me there is 31GB of free space.

What can i do?

Format it as exFAT

Ok will try that but was specifically told to make sure it was formatted as FAT32.
 USB memory issue? - smokie
FAT32 has a 4Gb filesize limit

14gb? My BMW map updates are 28gb.

Which is a real pain, as they often don't fit on a USB drive. Luckily mine updates OTA about 4 times a year,

Errr on reflection, the tool you use for the download, the BMW downloader does the zip extraction to the USB, you are using the BMW tool?
 USB memory issue? - Bobby
This isn’t coming from BMW……..
 USB memory issue? - Bobby
One of these “download the map from here” and then the guy provides you with tut activation code based on your VIN number.

Map is roughly the same size as my last BMW map - mind mine is older version than yours

I shall follow your progress with amused interest then.

You know it’s going to end in disaster don’t you…..

Popped out and bought some popcorn.

It will probably be tomorrow’s issue.
I have a fridge and shelf’s to deep clean tonight…
 USB memory issue? - Zero
Oh for the fridge saga I am half way through the Ben & Jerrys.

OK its a zip file, I have downloaded it, "extracted it" but comes through as one file and type is showing as winzip?

That doesnt sound right to me?

I'm sure for the BMW download manager maps when I extracted it it used to come through as File type "File"

Previous BMW map
Type of File - File
Road_Map_EUROPE_WEST_Route_2022-2

New map Version
Type of File WinZip File (.7z)
Maps Europe West ROUTE 2023-1

Link to original file that I downloaded:

Have you extracted it? do you have an unzipper? You need to use winzipapplication on the winzip file, and extract it straight to a USB
 USB memory issue? - Bobby
I was just using the standard windows "extract all" function but I guess thats the wrong answer as it hasn't achieved anything!
 USB memory issue? - Bobby
should I download this?

download.cnet.com/7-Zip/3000-2250_4-10045185.html

...I use 7-zip. It should unpack a .7z file quite happily.

Unless your original download was a .7z file, I suspect that someone may have compressed a file to .7z, and then further (default Windows) compressed it to a .zip file.

Not something I'd choose to do (little if any return), but I suspect if you download and use 7-zip to process the file you've downloaded (and possibly unzipped if it downloaded as .zip before extraction), you'll get an unpacked set of files.

edit : typo

so download 7-zip from where?
 USB memory issue? - tyrednemotional
...not sure where I got it from originally, but given I try to source "direct", I suspect from here:

www.7-zip.org/
 USB memory issue? - Bobby
this is weird, I have downloasded that and then tried to unzip the file and it seems to have just produced the same file for me again!

Grrr
 USB memory issue? - tyrednemotional
...how did you try to unzip it?

If it's installed like mine, it adds a 7-zip entry to the "right-click" context menu for files. Select that, and then "extract files".
 USB memory issue? - tyrednemotional
....and have you tried to unzip the .7z file (with 7-zip) or have you tried it on a .zip file.

(i.e. is it, as I conjectured, double-zipped?).
 USB memory issue? - Bobby
right, think I have finally got it!!!!

Cheers

Was going to go out and sit in the car and try the next bit but Scotland are actually beating Spain 1-0 - will wait till we are 1-2 down before going out!

You have got a virus checker etc running haven't you?
 USB memory issue? - Bobby
emmmm... the inbuilt windows security thingy only??

Don't think I put anything else on it after my last windows rebuild?
 USB memory issue? - Bobby
What freebie version do you recommend?
I just use the inbuilt Windows one.

Previously used McAfee before I rebuilt the laptop and took everything off it.
 USB memory issue? - tyrednemotional
...I haven't used anything but the built-in Windows standard one for years.

I do, however, run an occasional one-off scan with the free version of Malwarebytes, just for a second opinion.
 USB memory issue? - smokie
I have Malwarebytes which is resident in memory and checking all the time.

I only asked as I had the impression you might be trying to open a file from an "unknown source", which is something I'm more careful of these days.
 USB memory issue? - Bobby
Yeah was wary of that!

Is the inbuilt Windows one good enough? Does that provide “live” checking with downloads or only on subsequent routine scans?
 USB memory issue? - smokie
It should be OK, it's pretty good these days.

Though I'd make sure I had backups of my important stuff (as I always do)
 USB memory issue? - Bobby
Yeah everything is on Dropbox and good old fashioned external (not connected) drive

On the whole, Yes.
