say I want to find out what is exactly 10 miles south or 4 miles NW of my house, how can I do that on Google Earth ?
I know I could vaguely move around, but there must be some way of telling it to go 10 miles S of here ?
And didn't it used to display a scale on the screen ? - I'm sure it did, but I can't find it any more

due south is the same longitude as your current position. So you click on the rules button, set the scale to miles and draw a line 10 miles long that is the same longitude. I think!

I am just trying it. The ruler button gives you the heading - you want 180 degrees and need to have mouse navigation ticked.

Cheers, E3 - it allowed me to do what I wanted to do (ie solve 'where was I' in the Sunday Times travel section)
