I am sitting on my couch with laptop on wifi and iphone on wifi.
Laptop speedtest.net result is 38
Iphone speedtest app result is 105
Why the difference?

Because the iPhone has the better WiFi implementation.
Are they both connecting to WiFi using WirelessN (802.11n) or is the laptop only capable of WirelessG for example? WirelessN uses better modulation and can also uses MIMO.
We'd have to know more about iPhone and laptop WiFi card to comment further.

Have you checked what other WiFi networks are nearby and what channels they are using? Swapping channel might make a difference.
Does the VM router/Wi-Fi support the 5GHz band?

Also do you know what the laptop and iPhone report for the MCS Index?

Sorry. But the laptop and iPhone could both be connecting to the access point on the same WirelessN connection but using different Modulation and Coding Schemes. So basically using different modulation and a different number of channels.
This could be as simple as the iPhone supporting MIMO and the laptop not. MIMO being Multiple Input Multiple Output - so using more than one antenna to transmit data at different frequencies.
On a Mac it's easy to see what MCS Index number a connection is using... press the ALT key and click on the icon for WiFi in the menu bar. So mine currently is connected to the WirelessN on 2.4GHz and says MCS Index is 23.

So that means anything from 195 to 450Mbps.

Is the speedtest app identically the same as the speedtest.net? There are lots of similarly named apps but you need to compare like with like - if not, they would be measuring throughput in a different way and to different host servers.
Oh, and what unit are you reporting, sure they are the same in each case?

And did the speedtest.net and Speedtest app both select the same remote host to test against?
