Installing digital download after HD replacement - Rudedog
I've had to replace a HD on one of our MacBooks, I had on it a copy of Office 2011 which I bought via a digital download.

I still have the link and product key, will I be able to still use this?

Wish I had the CD but I needed to have Office in a hurry so couldn't wait for the post.

Have you tried the link? Or is that a silly question?

Your problem might be that the current version of Office for Macs is 2016.

See if the link works. If not come back here. I probably have a dmg disk file for Office 2011 for Mac. I assume it's no different to a regular copy - this was purchased and downloaded as part of the discounted software for home use programme.

Next, sort out a backup routine. Even an infrequently updated Time Machine backup would be useful. Applications and data can easily be restored from such a backup. Even the entire disk... I migrated the iMac to MacMini doing that.

Thanks.

Complicated, at the moment I don't have the laptop with me, maybe by the end of next week.

I think I bought the key via eBay.

I might add a back-up drive to our home network via the Airport Extreme for everyones use.

I have an old CD copy of Office that I got via the NHS scheme (£12) but that's stopped now, I'll try the link as soon as I have it back, I just thought I could recover the copy a bit like music -once you've bought it I thought you had it for life?

If you had the disk image (dmg) file you could just use it. I just wonder if Microsoft still has the Office 2011 install dmg files online.

After a failed HD, did you decide on an SSD to replace it - it would be much faster. Or maybe a hybrid HD with some flash storage to cache frequent files.

Unfortunately not, I found out about SSD's after I put in a larger 'old' HD, then I found out that my make and year of Pro was part of a recall for failing graphics cards, so the Pro is in for it's card to be replaced, then I'll try and re-install office 2011, otherwise I'll have to buy 2016.

Still bugs me that a digital download is not for life like it would be if it were on a CD.

Meant to add that I didn't think I was allowed to make a copy of my Office to CD or Stick.

Does this page help?

www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/office?ref=macdl&culture=en-us

It implies that, with the product key, you can download and re-install your version.

Thanks for that!

Luckily I made a note of the key, I'll give it a go when my laptop's back from repair.
