How do I make my laptop boot from the USB drive?
|
You may need to go into the bios and enable a boot sequence, and then there may a be a key to press at startup for the boot menu
what laptop is it?

>> Compaq
Well thats narrowed it down to 500 models over 30 years.
Model?
( sigh )

God knows, it's about two years old.

There'll be a sticker underneath it. The model will be on that.

Ok - firstly Compaqs need the USB boot drive with a boot partition on it in when you power it up
Turn it on, keep pressing the ESC key
You should get a menu with F9 listed as boot menu, press F9 and select USB
I have a question, why you doing this? you know you can screw the PC rigid from another OS booted?

You surely need to make sure that your machine will boot, as first option, from whatever type of media is loaded with your system rescue data, whether this a USB or a DVD.
It's pretty easy to do once in the BIOS menu.
To get there, it generally needs you to tap one of the function keys on starting up your PC - the specific F key can vary from make to make, but a search on the internet could give you the most likely one for your Compaq.

On my ACER laptop it's the F2 key!

The Esc key did the trick, thanks.
Not tried yet but I want to use the machine for Linux. It is not my main pc and I rarely use it now.

Why not set it up as dual boot?(from the H/D) - some Linux distro's allow you to set this up, so that you can boot into Either windows or linux at start-up.
