Wife's newish Galaxy is reporting 10.4Gb in use whereas in reality there is under 2Gb of files.

I know that cos I downloaded a file management utility which correctly reports file usage, and also copied all files to my PC to analyse where the space was being used.

Is a factory reset the answer?

Perhaps one include OS and application files and the other is data only?

I think my S5 uses something like 5GB for Android and apps alone.

And 10GB in use is not unreasonable.

I have around 6.33GB free on a 16GB phone.

My phone Galaxy S5, FWIW.

Total Space 16.00GB

System Memory 4.20GB (Operating System)
Used Space 4.37GB (Applications and associated files)
Cached Data 44.16MB (ignorable working stuff)
Miscellaneous Files 1.07GB (Data, my largest is Kindle @264MB)

Available Space 6.31GB

Plus a whole bunch of stuff on the SD card of course.

OK I'll have another look tonight as the sizes I have don't seem right (esp OS).

However she has hardly any "user data" on the phone - about 150 pics, no video, few documents. her Inbox was huge but I'm not sure that comes into it - she did have a clear down last night.

She does not, however, have an SD card. I have one I can put in once the issue is resolved (if it is an issue).

When you look, if you click on "miscellaneous files" or "used data" it will break it down further.

Different thing, I think. Worst case Mrs. Smokie is still showing more than 5GB free.

Those problems go back to the days of MBs on lower end phones that didn't keep pace. Not unlike Bill Gates and his 64k.

You can, of course, empty app caches from Settings>Apps and clicking on individual apps to enable the cache to be cleared.

Apart from a massive Inbox and a few pictures she isn't a very heavy phone user in apps terms. Facebook is about her limit. I'll take another look later or over the weekend. Thanks.

Thanks for the pointer NoFM, the problem was over 5Gb in the cache. I didn't bother to check what it was, just cleared it and she now has loads of free space.

As memory gets used up, most android apps (and the os) start to give up cache back to the free pool. Its not the problem it appears to be.

It was. It was preventing her receiving emails. As in receive send/failed. Wish I'd investigated to see the errant app now though...

Something is amiss, 5gb cache is a lot. Mine is currently standing at 693mb

I use SD maid to clean up and poke around the file system.

She does loads of facebooking and some email and takes a few pics. Maybe browses once in a blue moon but that's about it.

I bet it was Facebook's application cache that was taking a lot of space.
