Do iPads have Word and Excel equivalents? Is it possible to print from them?

Yes and Yes.

In fact Microsoft does a version of Office for the iPad. There will be free alternatives.

As for printing, how you achieve this depends on your setup at home. If you have a wireless printer then you probably can print directly. You might need some third party software.
