 AOL broadband DSL connection - Paul Robinson
Please forgive the possibly dumb questions, but until recently all my broadband experience has been with cable. Currently I'm connected (not wirelessly) via a BT line. AOL sent a Speedtouch 585 modem router and a broadband installation CD - I followed the step by step intructions and (tempting fate) it has all worked fine. My questions are:

1 - If I buy a new computer with AOL software pre installed, if I just connect the ethernet cable to the modem router, will it find the broadband?

2 - If the modem router ever packs up, what is the process for installing a new one?

If you were to plug in a PC or laptop to the Speedtouch 585 router it will get Internet access. No need for any software - unless AOL itself needs you to have software but I've never used AOL.

If the ADSL router packed in you could get a replacement quite cheap. You probably would need to configure it to connect to your line - that's what the AOL software probably did for you.

That surprised me as well. Does it still have the 'walled garden' approach to the Internet?

Not sure if AOL (as you're probably aware now part of Carphone Warehouse) still provides its own specialised version of Internet Explorer.

Yes, I believe AOL still has its own web browser, but it doesn't stop you from using AN Other browser instead.

I am still with AOL, I got a free laptop for a 24 month contract. Contract has now ended and laptop needs a repair (needs a new cable, and two new hinges so I need to buy a broken one to swop parts out).

I keep meaning to change to BE Broadband as I will get 20mbps and a static IP address but with uncertaincy about the move I have not got round to it.

Of course AOL is now just Opal/Carphonewarehouse etc.

Mine and the only reason I am still with them is they don't seem to mind going over the 40gb p/m download limit.

How much! Whatever are you downloading that makes you go over 40gb per month (or perhaps I shoudn't ask)?

dont take much to break a 40gb limit. Stream some live TV for a month and see how close you get....

I didn`t think AOL had a download limit! - my package is:
unlimited access
unlimited download
free unlimited phone calls to 01, 02, 03 numbers
and upto 8mbs broadband

all for £14.99 per month (last 3 months have been £7.99 - loyalty bonus)

TIP
if you ever need thier Tech support (India) ask for an Irish speaking Technician, you will be transferred to N.Ireland and then you can still converse in English but at least you can understand them!

There will be a fair use policy - which might be 40Gb. My limit is 100Gb/month which could easily be used if you watched a lot of HD programmes on iPlayer. I downloaded one the other day at it was nearly 1Gb!

Exactly, I missed Top Gear at 8:00 due to family issues so I watched it 9:30 on Iplayer that is alone is over 600mb.

Most my TV is now watched via the internet as I work at very funny times so I can't stick to a TV schedule.

Hoping to move into my new office soon in the other side of town so I shall need to get some proper broadband then. I may just get Virgin as I don't need a telephone as I use VIOP anyway.

The Help section of the BBCi Player on my Panasonic TV states at Normal Quality usage is about 350Mb at Normal Quality and double that at Higher Quality; watching Normal Quality for seven hours represents 2GB and the Higher Quality equivalent is, naturally, double that.

Whenever I watched iPlayer on my computer system before acquiring the Panny didn't seem to eat too much into my monthly allowance of 40GB, although I've never got near using that amount per month.
