Erasing hard disks. - The Nut
I have a stack of old pata hard disks that I need to wipe before giving to a local charity, can anyone recommend a free program to do this? Ideally something that will work on windows 7 64 bit.

I run projects where this is quite a common requirement in companies. On more than one occasion KILLDISK has been the tool of choice, and there is a free version.

Thanks smokie, got that running now. I guess people in general are more aware about these things now than they used to be, allot of the computers donated do not have disks in them.

A colleague says that with perseverance most of these 'disk wipers' can be undone, but one would have to be a determined soul to gain access.

It'd take quite a bit more than a bit of perseverance to undelete a disk wiped to US Dept of Defense standards. But we did have one cistomer who guillotined the disks in a mincing machine after we'd wiped them....

Not much point in wiping them first then!
