"Windows can't check for updates".
Is the message I am getting on my laptop. It is used infrequently nowadays, I usually bring it out every couple of weeks to charge the battery and check for updates.
I have tried the usual things, Googling the error message, but no joy.
It is running Vista. Any ideas, please?

May seem obvious, but is the laptop getting an Internet connection? Sometimes the wireless connection can be inadvertently turned off (it's usually turned on/off by a small switch on the edge of the laptop or pressing F(unction) and a Number key, such as 2).

Thanks Stuart.
It's sorted.
The official advice was to switch off auto update, leave 10 to 15 minutes and then try again. I tried that and it didn't work, so I left it for several hours while I went to watch some rugby and pour lubricants down my throat, when i got back and tried again, it worked.
