Strange document saving behaviour - Iffy
I have Notepad, Wordpad and OpenOffice on my netbook.

When I save a Notepad document, it saves as a Notepad document.

But when I attempt to save a Wordpad document, it saves as an OpenOffice document.

Why is this?

Wordpad will save documents with a .doc extension. Your netbook is setup to open documents with a .doc extension using OpenOffice by default.

Slight variation to the above in that you like WordPad but sometimes wish it would achieve a little more without all the bells and whistles of Word, try Jarte:

Stu,

Jarte looks a neat and tidy program but...

....the documents are saved as OpenOffice, same problem as with Wordpad.

M'thinks it might be time to bring OpenOffice into line.

I might have a root around in its settings - or blitz it altogether.

>>>>documents are saved as OpenOffice<<<<<

do you mean as .odt files ?

That is the native format for OpenOffice however OO can be set to default save as .doc format. Much more useful if sending as attachments to (the reducing number of) Word users!!

I think they might be rtf, but the main point is I open Wordpad, save the document and it always appears on the desktop as on OpenOffice document.

When I open the saved document the next time, it opens as an OpenOffice document - it's like it's never been in Wordpad.

Wordpad saves files as RTF by default (rich text format),
You have Open office set to open RTF files (as well as others)
Which means windows has set the default program for RTF files as Open office.

Thats why Open office grabs them and opens them

So how can I change the setting in OpenOffice?

you dont - you set windows

In windows 7, its start button/default programs/associate a file type with a program

So it is - thanks, Zero.

My, what a lot of extensions there are.

If Windows XP, then right click on one of the files and select Open With and then Choose Program. Then in the dialogue box select Wordpad and put a tick in the always use this program. That's it. Now a .rtf file is associated with Wordpad.
