Done something stupid to the laptop - Netsur
I have been ripping DVDs to the harddrive but one DVD caused problems and a piece of software called Cyberlink DVD Suite always got in the way of Windows Media Player and so deleted it. Now the DVD player is not working properly.

What have I done and how do I rectify it? Is it going to cost me??

This is a suite of software for DVDs which will include playing them. But for playing you can use Windows Media Player instead. You might need to reset the default application for opening DVDs... or reinstall Cyberlink DVD Suite.

Or go back to the Amstrad 9512 o:)

You've upgraded it...:-) It was the Amstrad PCW 8512..

I have "fond" memories of the 8256 and the need to scroll through databases for what seemed an eternity to find something out. It cost £399 complete with printer, incredibly cheap at the time.

Re the non-playing of DVDs - it just might be that installing the K-Lite audio and codecs Full Pack may provide a solution as well as re-installing Cyberlink DVD.

Also, in WMP>Tools>File Types ensure that all file types, DVD etc are Enabled.

In what way isn't it working?

Put a DVD in and it doesn't want to play!

Put a DVD in and try playing it with Windows Media Player. Does that work?

If you have the source disk for cyberlink, you pop it in the dvd drive and reinstall. Otherwise you wil need to buy a copy, off the web or ebay or pcshop.

I assume the laptop came with a recovery cd or recovery partition, you could use this but you might loose all the stuff you have ripped to the hard drive.

IT folks like to make things complicated.
Why not restore it to a time just before the cyberlink DVD was uninstaled?
Or why not use the Microsoft fixit tool that I posted to try to install Microsoft's alternative drivers?
