Should one bother?

I have absolutely no idea at all. I wouldn't even know where to look. It would be good to have an expert tell us, so here's a bump up to top place in the listing.

no, I think not.

Various reason for that:
Its not going to screw up your data, which is far more likely to be backed up off device than a PC/laptop
You can't really download stuff easily other than from the play store.
Anything you do get will be a maliciously written app that you downloaded (yes you can get nasty stuff from the play store before it gets pulled) and gave permissions manually so an AV won't touch it.

And its much easier to set an android device back to factory state.

True but what if the malware/app then ran up a bill via premium texts or calls? And do you double check permissions requested/needed by all apps when you install?

And what about an app monitoring logons to banking websites/apps?

Yes you can and I've installed a few things that I've had to (temporarily) allow to install from an apk downloaded from elsewhere.

But how effective AV on a phone is - no idea. But I do run AV software - free from Barclays.

I said easily, not side loading stuff. You have your techie hat on.

And as for running up bills on the phone, thats not an AV job - thats a kind of fone firewall.
