It would be prudent for me to back up some if not all e-mails. Can I just save the whole kaboosh to an external hard drive. Outlook express BTW.

Quick google ("outlook express backup software") came up with this:
www.iopus.com/guides/free-oe-backup.htm
or this:
download.cnet.com/Outlook-Express-Backup/3000-2242_4-10159751.html
Don't use Windows though so can't say whether they're any good.

You just need to locate the store folder and back of all the files, its a while since I have last had to back up outlook express but you will find a folder. In XP its very well hidden and you need to enable hidden folders. If you ho into outlook express, click on tools and accounts (I think) you should see a section which says maintance, in there will be the store location. Navigate to that and backup all the files. You may also want to back up the contents as a CSV file.
I am sure google will have a more specific answer.

Use the tools/options/maintenance/store-folder and import, and then import export function under the "File" menu of OE to backup and restore. see
