Trying to copy videos for my un-computer literate friend (even worse than me).
She has a Windows Vista laptop and it will be pretty much as it came with no added software.
Will it play avi or mpeg4 or both files?

Windows as standard (the media player) comes with a surprisingly short list of codecs (used to decode the media types)
I would advise downloading & installing the K-Lite codec pack, covers anything.

Or download the free VLC media player, from www.videolan.org, which will play pretty much any media file format.

I would agree with Zero's recommended approach.
VLC is a great player but a) means you need to use different software and b) doesn't do a good job of indexing and organising files.

Also have a look for the "Combined Community Codec Pack" (CCCP).
Windows' own Media player will play pretty much everything once that's installed.
