 Norton or Microsoft - Stuu
Ive been given Norton 2013 for my birthday, is it worth putting it on to replace Microsoft Security Essentials or is there little gain in doing so?

I'd stick with MSE. Never had any problems with it across 2 desktops and 3 laptops

I have used Norton since 2001.

No viruses/internet problems at all.

Norton's a real PITA, the only time I used it it slowed my PC to a crawl,

MSE works for me, it's free and so are the regular updates.
 Norton or Microsoft - Zero
It slows down your machine (a real pain if its not high spec), you can never get rid of it easily and updates are not free.

Apart from that I love it.

I have MSE

Its still brand new in plastic - stick it on ebay?

If I find a PC with Norton on it, I always mention it in my health that it is not recomended. To be fair I get lot of work from Norton (as it plays up!). The new versions are not too bad and is far better than McCafee.

MSE is ok but the protection is a little weaker than Norton but it causes so much less problems?

What I do use? Kaspersky for my office PC and MSE for my home ones.

They seem to be selling for £18-20 on Ebay and my mum only paid a few more quid than that so might stick it on there, seems to be demand enough to get a sale at almost the money back.

Would you offend your mum if you were to ask her to take it back and get a refund (if she has the receipt) - saying something like it's not suitable for your PC? Then get her to get you something else.
 Norton or Microsoft - Stuu
She got it a while ago and hasnt got the receipt anymore unfortunately. She is ok about it, she said get the money back and buy a DVD/CD etc - it was me that felt terrible, I hate rejecting any gift but because it was of value I felt it was equally wrong to pretend it was going to be used - lucky for me my family are a practical bunch, not prone to sensitivity about such things.

Just got to see what the wife got me now, she was fast asleep when I went to work this morning so I have left my birthday prezzie from her ( which she left on the sofa ) for when she gets home tonight. I do hope it isnt Norton....

I dunno, wouldnt turn down a Commando.....
 Norton or Microsoft - Roger.
I have just ditched Zone Alarm AV + firewall, (gulp _-I paid for it when on offer) as it was slowing down the loading of sites with heavy flash content and so on - even to the point of freezing Firefox completely on occasions.
(I do know that Flash has had a few problems with FF 17).
I'm now using Comodo Internet Security Premium which is totally free.
It incorporates a decent anti-virus, a good firewall and one of the best HIPS in the business. It also has the capability of running any program in the Comodo sandbox and also gives you a virtual desktop if you want to use it.
It has a little "gadget" which if you choose to show it, gives a one click launch of any of your installed web browsers, sandboxed.
You need to be a little careful when installing it as there are, unwanted, I feel, options to install Comodo Dragon browser (Chrome) , change your DNS settings to Comodo's (I use & recommend Open DNS) own and to reset your default search engine and home page to Yahoo.
There is a guide here :-

www.techsupportalert.com/content/how-install-comodo-firewall.htm#main-content

to installing and tweaking the settings.
I have tried Comodo in the past and have always given up as it has had many verbose pop-ups.
This latest version is running as smooth as silk, using the suggested settings as in the above link, on my Windows7, 64 bit laptop, with hardly any user input needed.
Download Comodo here:-

www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/free-internet-security.php

PS. Forget "Geek Buddy" & Anti-error bits of the installation. I installed 'em, but deleted the desktop links to the services, as unnecessary bloat.

Slightly off-topic - Windows Defender replaces MSE in Windows 8 and is built-in rather than an optional opt-in. Not sure if it can be disabled - presumably it can, otherwise Norton, etc., will be out of business

It could be worse, an AOL install disc.

Then you'll have two items that are virtually impossible to remove from your PC once installed ;)

Got £20.07 for it after fees on Ebay, not bad at all for something that is apparently not that good!

Best thing you could have done with it FoR, we ended up getting the IT bloke we use to get rid of Norton finally, i couldn't manage to, years of slow running and paying for it bonkers.

Followed good advice here and run MSE since and the PC has never run better.

I also run 10bit malware fighter just in case, again never a problem.
