I've bought a 12v computer cooling fan off Ebay. It's got a red and a black wire which go to +ve and -ve respectively and the fan blows nicely. There is also a yellow wire attached to the connector. What's this for? Speed control? Detonator? Hair dryer conversion?
Your expertise in this would satisfy my curiosity.
TIA

The third wire is for speed control.

Strictly speaking, the third wire is for speed sensing, not control. Its a simple pulse tacho line.

I bought a similar cooling fan for my SKY (Pace 2600C) box. Hooked it up to a redundant plug transformer and it runs 24/7 with no problems! (The Pace 2600C is a square box with air vents on top.)
I just cut off the third wire & wrapped the short piece left in insulating tape.
(Overheating is a primary cause of failure of SKY boxes and it does get hot on the Costa del Sol!)
