I'm getting fed up with ads' appearing for things i've previously shopped for. I'm not very computer savvy but i believe these are caused by "cookies". I've tried altering privacy settings to block cookies but then other things stop working including Hotmail. I wondered if i coud do a periodic clearout of cookies , any help/advice would be much appreciated.

My suggestion would be to run CCleaner when you want to remove cookies, you can set it to keep the ones you don't want to delete. It will also empty your internet cache and remove redundant stuff from the registry if you want. I've been using it for years and it's never caused a problem as far as I know.

Blocking cookies can have unuseful effects as you have discovered.

You could also use Adblock extension - I use Chrome with Adblock and scarely see any ads.

+1 for CCleaner.

Once you've installed it, and before you "clean" for the first time, go into the fairly conspicuous tabs and options to protect the cookies you do not wish to lose.

Could be this place, other forums, news sites, iPlayer etc. etc. Stuff like that.

+2 for CCleaner. Also been using it for many years and never had a problem. Current version is 3.25.

I don't protect any cookies, I just let CC clear what it wants to when I am using Firefox as browser. Again no problems with purchases or using bank sites etc.

If you start a process to puchase something and then mess up by, say, clicking for a previous screen and it goes pear shape, I run CC to clear the cookies and then start again. I like to think it avoids a risk of buying two or having to make an alteration.

The Firefox add-ons are good. For instance ghostery puts a little window at the top right of your screen showing who is spying on you -- can be as many as a dozen or more all collecting data of what you are watching! Set ALL the ghostery blocking options and they still come up but are crossed through. Also then, you often get a message saying Gh has stopped a site sending you elsewhere. Still no 'use' problems.

When I had first been online for a few months I stumbled on my cookie list and was astonished to fnd the vast number I had accumulated, hence regular cleaning with CC now. Would they have slowed my computer down if left? Would they have increased the possibilty of a virus taking hold?

I've used Ccleaner for years but recently I've been playing with Slimcleaner which seems to find and clean out quite a bit of junk even after a Ccleaner session: slimcleaner.com/
