Plus side: Cheaper.

Minus side: I have never managed to find 3rd party or reconditioned cartridges that produce the colour balance and quality that genuine ones do in a modern inkjet printer. Not an issue for documents and such, but if you print photos it's a real problem.

Can't say I've noticed that one 3rd party product is any better or worse than the others I have tried over the years.

What is worth doing when buying genuine carts is to have a good shop around online. You'd be surprised how much cheaper thay can be than what they go for in the shops. Often as cheap as buying compatible products over the counter. My last set of six Epson inks I got for 40-something EUR from a specialist online printer supplies store, rather than the thick end of 80 demanded elsewhere.

I agree, TC. I have given up using compatible cartridges and every time I need new ones, I shop around. Prices continually fluctuate and I can pretty well guarantee that I never use the same source twice in succession.

I, on the other hand, use compatible cartridges all the time and can't say I've ever noticed an issue. Whilst I do not print pictures my wife does all the time and she thinks they're fine.

I do print presenttions and never have an issue.

It is quite possible that others have a more discerning eye than me, but I really can't see a difference.

And my last set of 6 Epson (compatible) cartridges cost £4.50 (bought 4 full sets for £19.00ish) so the real ones would have to be an awful lot better for 8 times the price, especially given how much the kids print.

I have an HP All In One and have mixed experience with compatibles. Some have been fine (don't do any "precision" printing though to compare colours etc) and some have not worked very well at all and had to be thrown away. So I now only buy HP, infrequently. if I was using them a lot I'd probably do more work to find a consistently working clone.

I've used compatible inkjet cartridges for at least 16 or 17 years, firstly with a Canon BJC600e and now my current Epson R300 and photographs have always been excellent.

I buy the required six Epson cartridges required in pack form (usually five or six packs at a time to make the most of the delivery charge) from www.diskdepot.co.uk/acatalog/INK_CHOOSER.html or, occasionally, www.7DayShop.com.

When I first got my printer (must be at least 6 years ago and it still works well when needed) I dabbled with compatible cartridges. It's a Canon Pixma iP5000. For general work type docs you'd be happy enough but for photos then a few I tried had a green tint. Tried lots of tinkering to remove the tint but gave in.

The cartridges for this used to be quite reasonable for genuine ones at the time. They have gone up over time though. Probably because Canon introduced different cartridges for other printers and these aren't as common.

I don't print a great deal though. When cartridges become very expensive I'll get a different printer.

I tried refills a few years ago for my old Dell all-in-one printer but they weren't very successful, so I took the more expensive option of buying direct from Dell.

Having recently bought a new Canon printer, I'll probably stick with genuine Canon cartridges, but shop around online for the best deal.

i got a canon pixma 4500, i dont see any difference in compatible inks and geniune except its cheaper,

i buy mine at choice stationary, where they sell the think brand, which magazine tested compatible inks and recommended them, but quality do vary.

its in the ink that manufacturers make the money, and not in the printer itself

Sometimes it`s cheaper just to buy a new printer than to re-new cartridges for an existing one that may be 12months old!

I have tried remanufactured cartridges of all sorts, and filled them myself. Results have been mixed from bad through poor to acceptable. I always buy new branded manufacturer ones now.

People print less these days - HP profits are down because they sell less ink. And other reasons too of course but ink sales are down.

Yup, people do print less. Its a direct consequence of pads and smart phones, where people carry stuff around electronically with them, rather than print it.

I also imagine it's because people use on-line photo processing. New customers often get an x% discount, so they sign up, and then when they want their next set of prints just sign up with someone else who are also offering new customer discounts.

Or pop into Boots, Tesco, wherever with your portable media device and get them to print them out for you.

Some people are not up to speed on what happens in the IT world. HP has made stupid business decisions which have impacted business. And made some poor decisions on CEOs too. That was what I alluded too. Hurd was bad enough. Then Carly. And it went down hill. The purchase of Autonomy was worst... huge right down.

People are printing less and less photographs. They now are being used on facebook, twitter, flickr type sites, or being show on off on pads or phones. Even the on-line printers are printing less.

... and yet there was a statistic somewhere the other day that 10% of all photos ever taken, were taken in the last 12 months.

And none of them printed onto paper of any kind.

One reason people print less has to be the exorbitant price of replacement cartridges. I bet the margins are huge.

Given the difference between what they go for retail and what they can be had for online, I reckon "huge" is an understatement and "eye-watering" would be more accurate.
