Linking Vista and Win7 PCs - movilogo
How I can link a Windows Vista PC with a Windows 7 PC so that I can transfer files between them directly over the same WiFi connection?

Searched on the web but getting confusing results.

Search for Microsoft articles on:

Windows 7 File sharing essentials

Vista File sharing essentials

Networking home computers running different versions of Windows

That is all you need.

Try it and if it fails, post your problem here.

If they are on the same network - and it seems they are connected to the same network via wifi - then all you need to do is turn on file sharing.

I dare say I could sort this out if I could be bovvered, but whilst I can easily access files on my W7s PC from my XP PCs, but not the other way round.

Have you turned on file sharing on the XP machine?

Not sure if this is relevant but I can't share between my XP work laptop and Windows 7 PC:

The Win7 machine can read and write data to folders on the XP machine, so sharing is working one way at least. I suspect if I read the links in John H's post properly I can sort it (or even my own post in the old thread ....), for now I just try and remember to put stuff I may need to share on the NAS rather than the Win 7 PC.

Windows 7 PC can access shared folders in Windows Vista PC.

But Windows Vista PC cannot access Windows 7 PC. When from Vista I try to connect to Win 7 PC with correct user name / password [= for an account in Win 7 PC] it says log in unsuccessful.

File sharing will be turned off by default on the Windows 7 machine. Probably a good idea to put files on the NAS which is probably configured with mirrored disks.

On the Windows 7 box:

1. Open up control panel
2. Goto Network and Sharing Center
3. Click on 'Change advanced sharing settings' on the left pane
4. Enable 'Turn on file and printer sharing'
5. Save changes

My settings are already like that! I even turned off password protection during connection in Win 7 PC. Still no joy.

Some success. I can now access Win7's My Documents folder only from Vista PC. But if I try to share a C-drive folder in Win7 PC, it says this folder can't be shared.

Making Win 7 shared folders visible to Vista and/or XP:

1. In Windows 7, right-click the shared folder and then click Properties.

2. Click the Sharing tab, click Advanced Sharing. Check Share this folder box.

3. Click Permissions button, Click Add.

4. Highlight the account which you want to share this folder to (Account name which will access the folder), then check the Allow box for Full control.

5. If the account name is not listed, click Add button. Type Everyone and click OK.

6. Click Everyone in the user list, and check the Allow box for Full Control in the "Permissions for Everyone" pane and click Apply, click OK

Above steps did make the shared Win7 folder visible in Windows Vista but when double click on that from vista it presents me with a username/pwd box and even entering valid uid/pwd combo does not allow me to see the contents.

Must have done something wrong earlier, I followed above steps again and now Vista can access Win7's shared folder.

Finally done. Thanks guys.

In theory the above method should work for Spamcan, and Focus too.

I think the Windows sharing steps are more complex that it should be.

The steps mentioned in various websites are often hit and miss.
