Have recently lost my wireless connection on my Vista desktop. Assumed the old usb had died so bought another which is recognised during the set up process but would not complete the driver install. Have tried installing a new PCI wifi card which installs fine but still no wireless networks found. There are no errors in Device manager for either but when I type ipconfig no adapter shows hence no ip address.
I have pinched the powerline adapter off the xbox and this works fine.
Your thoughts much appreciated .

Other devices finding the network, and connecting ok?

Yes x2 lappies and 2 x mobys

Thought that may be the case - but sometimes the obvious gets overlooked!
(ie the Wireless Access Point failing....)
|
remove all device drivers for all previous wifi adaptors. Delete all previous wifi connections and profiles.
Then start again.
|
Do the drivers for the new wireless card show up in device manager? Is the new WIFI USB or mini PCI?
|
Yes they are there - it is a normal PCI wifi adapter
|
How would I do that / where should I look ?

the drivers can be deleted from within device manager, and the wifi profiles from the network and sharing centre

Sorry I missed the fact it was a desktop.
Have you restarted your router? Even though other machines are connecting fine I still sometimes find it fixes the issue.
Also what is version of wireless are you transmitting in? E.g 802.11g/802.11n.
Also check the drivers know you're in Europe, as channel 11-13 won't show up if the drivers think you're in the USA as you cannot legally use those channels in the USA but a lot of routers are setup to transmit in that range. You can easily change the channel by using the routers web config page.
Just also get this clear, are no wireless networks showing at all or is just yours that doesn't show up?
|
Yes tried re-booting the router. Its a basic 54g 802.11g (same as router) . I will check the channels but there are no other networks showing either nada (normally a couple of others around)!

Sounds like another program may be trying to manage the wireless. Go to run and type in services.msc then see if something called Wireless Zero Configuration is turned on, if it is not turn it on, then you should be able to see the wireless networks.
In Windows 7 it is called WLAN Autoconfig.
|
In Manage network connections 'Wireless Network Connection 11' is disabled when I try to enable it it goes through the motions but doesnt enable it.
Have just searched for an updated driver and it has found and installed a newer 2010 version. Have tried re-starting the computer but still no joy.
|
Have you checked the windows zero configuration is enabled? What version of windows are you usuing?
|
Vista - cant see it when I run Services.msc
|
Not sure what the service is called under Vista, haven't got any Vista wireless machines here to check they are all in the office.
Is there anything listed which is described as wireless management? Should be either something like WLAN or Zero configuration.

Is your wireless broadcasting it's ID (SSD?). I think you can prevent that...? Someone will be along who knows more about that...

Update: Zone Alarms was the problem. I uninstalled it and Hey Presto I have wireless again.
So I have replaced Zone Alarms with Comodo, is this a decent alternative ?
|
What's wrong with the Windows Firewall
|
There are some reviews critical of Comodo's anti-virus capabilities too.
|
Happy to be corrected but I had always understood it to provide only very basic protection and the recommendation was to replace it.
