When I switched on my computer this morning, my home page had disappeared and it had been replaced by a window which insisted that I made a choice between five browsers before I could continue. Furthermore, it left an icon on my desktop.
Who dunnit, and why?

The EU late 2009/early 2010 forced Microsoft to give users the choice, not aware of any further activity in this area.
There should be an icon on your desktop labelled 'Browser Selection' or similar if this is what has triggered it.

There's one there now, but there had never been one previously.

Looks like your computer has just gone through a Microsoft automatic Update cycle.

Hmmm...now you mention it, my machine did receive an update to the Windows updater a few weeks ago.
Now on version 7.6.something-or-other. If the browser selection was missed at the last updater update to 7.4... then that may be the trigger.

Cos the EU told them to.
