 Iphone 3 question - BobbyG
I have itunes on my laptop and I sync my ipod classic to it for songs. I have an itunes account that I download free podcasts through, but never actually buy anything.

Missus has just got an iphone 3G. I soent most of last night updating my itunes to the latest software and then updating her phone to the latest firmware. So somehere along the line, I guess I put this under my itunes account?

So I connect her phone and it recognises it etc. Now, ideally I would prefer her to have her own itunes account for getting apps etc. Is this possible on the one laptop? If so, how do I do it?

Right - you have opened up a can of worms here. You can have two different iTunes accounts on the same iTunes install, but with two machines synching you are going to run into issues with apps and music.

The best solution is to create a new Windows user account on the machine that she can log onto. This will provide a totally separate iTunes user, separate synch and very much easier to manage.

OK so I would set up a different user on the PC and then download another itunes program and then point to music files again?

Excuse the ignorance but does that double all the music files on the computer or does it just basically act as a shortcut?

As I only have an ipod classic, so won't be getting apps for it (which is all that the missus is looking for) I assume I could just use my itunes account for that as there will never really be a conflict unless I end up getting an iphone in the future?

Yes

and then download

No. The same install will be available fresh to the new user and will build its own library from the same music.

Nope.

or

Nope its the same iTunes but with its own user settings.

She won't, she will quickly use it has an iPod as well.

Just noticed you said I can have 2 itunes accounts on the same install? Is that not what I am looking for?

The devices are used as follows

ipod classic - currently set up to automatically sync and I only have music or podcasts on itunes. Its a 64GB classic

iphone 3 - although linked, is not set to sync anything, will realistically want to handpick some music from the library (do i just drag from library to device or set up a playlist purely for the phone and sync with it?) and also download apps. At some point in the future she may well want to sync with calendar, contacts etc but that will be sometime down the road!

you can, but its not advisable.

The ideal way to manage music, is to set up a drive or directory with the music and get the music from somewhere other than Apple and mage it yourself. . Then use iTunes to index it and synch it to the devices. Its much better for recovery too.

OK this is what I have done so far

Set up new User on the PC - Mrs G
When signed in as that user, I have set up itunes. I have pointed itunes to the music library that is on the PC and it has started importing from there (although I stopped it just now as it will probably take all night)
Set her up with a new Itunes account and connected the iphone and all seems well - has been able to download apps and I have transferred some music across and made up a playlist just to make sure it is working and it is.

So all is well so far, thanks for your help!!

Her email is a hotmail one - have set that up on hger phone but need to look into it more re synching contatcs, diary etc but this will do for starters!!

The Apple way!

Sorry Bobby, not very helpful. I've just procured and set up an iPad for my non-techy aunt. I have got her going with it, but I really have no idea what it's doing half the time.
