All recordings on my V+ are now showing an error saying that they were recorded on a channel that I no longer have and error code 2042.
This is an obvious fault as many of them are BBC - I have googled this

Anyone encountered this? I really hate phoning Virgin as I always get passed from pillar to post!

Virgin, I believe took over NTL.
From what you have just said, the call centres are still the same as they were........

Virgin did not take over NTL. Virgin Mobile and NTL merged (NTL might have technically take over) and bought the right to continue to use the Virgin brand name.
Branson makes lots of money by the Virgin companies paying him to use the Virgin name.
So the call centres are essentially the same - so poor a lot of the time.
