Marion Mathie AKA SWMBO - bathtub tom
Has died.

Perhaps a mod could arrange for the acronym to be displayed in bold, gothic script in recognition of our regular usage here?

Struggled with that one, not having heard of her. SWMBO comes from Rider Haggard, not Rumpole.

Can you post a link to the Rider Haggard connection crankcase? You've got me bothered and it could be a good pub quiz question.

AFAIR John Mortimer had Rumpole quote quite a bit from various 'old luv's' in literature of whom RH was but one.

Excellent! A shed-load of people are going to not know that, including me until 5 minutes ago!

Absolutely correct Roger..

I seem to remember Round the Horne doing their version of She.....

They announced the story of Ayesha - the great white queen......

.....you can imagine the comments of Julian and Sandy .....

I must dig out my complete collection ..it's a while since I listened and they still make me laugh ....

Marion Mathie was actually the second actor to pay Hilda.

I had to look up the first; Peggy Thorpe-Bates who died in 1989. As in most of these cases the replacement never quite surpassed the original.

Crickey BT, I had to read that twice. I was about to offer you condolences. Thought you were putting a jolly brave face on things.

Phew!

Too much She information follows. Nobody need read it. I'm not forcing you.

Yes, She Who Must Be Obeyed is Ayesha, and the book is for me fairly readable, for Haggard.

There were two significant attempts at a film - Hammer did one in the sixties which wasn't bad, although I'm not sure Bernard Cribbens would have been my first choice. The repeated trumpet phrase is great!

But for me the 1935 version with Helen Gahagan is the better. It was the only film she was ever in, and I think that a waste. It had astonishing sets and camerawork for its day. The main doorway into the mountain had previously been used in the original King King a couple of years earlier, if you're looking for seriously obscure pub quiz questions.

There was also the Hammer "Return of She" which is dreadful but watchable on a wet Wednesday.

The good thing about writing a character who quotes literature, is that you don't have to write half the the book, you just nick the good bits from other people.
