It's that time of year when im building a 3ft high raised bed of about 9ft by 8ft so needs filling with Top soil.

It's having veg in mainly and a few flowers around the edge,

I understand there is different grades of soil from premium to middle to cheap stuff.

Do they do soil specifically for growing veg?

Prices are between £36.00-50.00 per ton thats all i have found local on the net as not been to garden centres as yet,

We had some top soil last year, and foolishly let the guys doing the garden remodelling (hah!) get it themselves. We ended up with what must have come from a field directly, as we had no end of weeds and indeed a few cabbages come up. We didn't much mind, and cleared it all, but others might object.

One of those you get what you pay for things I reckon.

Can't you find the soil from elsewhere in your garden and enrich it with well-rotted farm manure? That's what I would do and it would work out a lot cheaper than importing the whole thing.

If your garden is small I appreciate that might not be an option.

The garden is small ish but the soil is dead as originally there were two trees where the veg plot is and these died i cut them down last year leaving just the stumps in the ground and covering these up with soil & the raised bed.

The grass is pretty much dead so that will be up this year and new turf to be laid, new soil required for all the garden eventually.

Yes heard horror stories of weeds and rocks in soil. :-(

Topsoil is roughly 1250 kg/m³, or roughly 1¼ tons/m³

I don't know about your topsoil, but if I were putting in a raised veg bed I would rather have two beds in that space, each 8 ft x 4ft. You can then reach all the bed without climbing up 3 ft and would not need to dig it each year!

It might also improve things if you find a local stables to bring you a trailer of well rotted manure for the base layer, they are usually quite keen to get rid of the stuff - failing that our local mushroom farmer will deliver a load of used compost for a few pounds.

Im going to split it or build a small wall so i can get to the middle easier.

Compost is going in and have made drain holes around the edges for water to seep out.

"Topsoil" brand is reliable. They are owned by British Sugar Corporation and soil is reclaimed when the beet are washed prior to processing.

Popped to B & Q last night on way home and got some of these Aerated Concrete Blocks never seen them before there very light compared to that of the standard thing which weighs a bit, anyway for the sum of about £1.60 each snapped up 15 to finish off the raised bed...

Anyone used the Aerated Concrete Blocks what they like for drilling etc, there supposed to be fine for load bearing walls!!!

Good ole Sugar beet, has been refered to as the Arable Pig - due to the fact they get six different products due to processing it!
