We need a new bird table because the one that was left here was on its last legs and a North Westerly finished it orf,
I can cut a piece of wood with a saw, and actually made a wooden fruit bowl using a lathe (48 years ago)
I'm going to have a go at this one ~ www.riversidewoodcraft.co.uk/bird-tables/137-triple-bird-table.html
Can one buy moulded wood like that, or do I need a spokeshave or somthing?
|
I would use a rasp - a sort of course wood file.
|
I would use a fine bladed electric jigsaw.
|
Those are pre-formed edges to the bird table - you can buy similar mouldings in good wookworking stores - but personally I'd just make it with straight sides :-)
|
You could but you would still need a rasp to finish the scolloped edges. Buy the sort that flat on one side and rounded on the other - known as a bastard rasp I believe. Very handy tool.

I would use my credit card.
Not an entirely flippant suggestion, you could buy the bigger sheltered platform ready made, and confine the use of your DIY skills to the simpler task of adding the smaller platforms.

Thanks to all (and Iffy) :)
I think I'll go with Gromit's idea if I can source the mouldings locally, failing that I'll invest in a Bosch jigsaw and a rasp file as there are a few other jobs I could possibly turn my hand to.

Do I see a small retail venture looming in the canine household?
|
The thought that somebody would pay £150 for the up market (mock Tudor?) Bird Table horrifies me. However it must represent a commercial opportunity for Canine friend. You will soon pay for the Jigsaw!

I would use the picture as a very loose sort of blueprint - not to be copied exactly!
Me would do something different with the roof-supports, to keep the feeding tray clear, no nooksan crannies for stuff to accumulate in.
Then me would drill holes in the feeder tray base, but cover fron the underside with some polypropolene mesh or such like, so that rain water could drain out without taking any seed with it.
Then me would extend the feet a bit and put a hole in the ends, so that it could be fastened to the Lawn with a spike, or the patio with a rawl-bolt, then it cant get blown over.
And finally I would fit a small battery and light controlled by a "magic-eye" that comes on at night for the night-feeders, this would attract moths and midges, then Nightingales and Nightjars!
And finally, if you are like me, to get the "scalloped" edges, just close your eyes as you saw!
Hope this helps in your project Sire! and I didn`t notice any perches either! I would add a few of those as well!

Good ideas devonike! I shall use most of em if I decide to go into production,
We could call it the dog & devon mrk IV tweet suite ;)

Actually Dee and pmh, there is a chap on the A390 between St. Awful and Truro who carves out a living of sorts,
I've taken a few close ups of that bird table with my trusty Lumix G2,
I'll go and see him to see how much he would charge, to knock one up!
Ere he is ~ g.co/maps/vjmfw

To get the scalloped edges .......... start off with a piece of wood about 3 times as wide as you need the finished article to be, make a row holes of the appropriate diameter with a hole cutter or hole saw and then cut away the excess wood with a rip saw.

I like his wooden mushrooms, I had the real thing up in Warleggan, 4 of of them in fact,

Sounds easier said than done L'es, knowing me - I'd end up with only 8 fingers!
:o)

I've got a couple of mushrooms and I've got Woody.
Woody is about 4' tall and a half a tree trunk with a grumpy face carved in it.
I did have trouble persuading Ian it wasn't too heavy to bring home in the caravan but the cats love it as a scratching post.
