I would like a dog again. - Dutchie
We have two cats at the moment which are great pets. The youngest a female Molly follows me everywhere not like my missus who I follow.>:)

The last Dog we had was a crossbred Poodle Trixie lovely dog he lived till the age of 14.We used to have dogs when I was a lad German shepherd Keeshond and a Irish Terrier.

I wonder in the future if it would be better to get a bitch. We've always had dogs but bitches tend to be more friendly.Don't run off so quick.I know they come into season twice a year.

There are so many different breeds,I would like a puppy medium size and not to demanding when grown up.Not this year to many things happening at the moment but a dog is always a good mate.

Don't go for one of these!

www.russianblackterriers.com/assets/images/autogen/a_9Y236D-210.jpg

Friends of mine have one and they need a mini JCB to clear the poo out if the garden plus an hour a day grooming! Who needs that AND it isn't a lap dog!

Any input would be welcome there are a few experts on this forum and I will listen to advice.

We have a Sealyham / Lucas cross. He's great but he doesn't like the car. They're Welsh though. Bound to be a bit odd eh?

Large, small, long hair, smooth coat, needs lot of exercise. Savage guard dog, good with children, gets on well with cats? Need more input from you I think Dutchie. Friends of mine have had a very good result with getting a dog from a dog rescue organisation; eany of thme are not there because are out of control - many come from the homes of deceased elderly people. My sister gets on very well with her Cairn terrier which is small and friendly.

Yes Dutchie, we need to know what kind of dog you are after, what you expect from your dog, and what you can give to your dog.

Funnily enough, rescue greyhounds are easy to look after pets. They don't need much exercise, just a couple of sprints a day down the park after a ball.

Rescue ones are very aloof tho, and don't give a great deal back to the owner in the way of affection. Brought up in Kennels - no human socialising when young. Get a greyhound pup however and they do become warm sociable animals.

Myself? cant stand the things, overgrown whippets - Horrid.

I saw a black Labradoodle where we used to live in Truro - what a smashing dog!

Have a look around here Dutchie:

This is a wonderful breed Dutchie, one of the best in the world IMO:

Ignore that - I keep posting the Rhodesian Ridgeback but it comes up as a Lab!

My daughter has a flatcoat retriever. It's an absolutely charming animal although now quite big and strong.

Don't expect it to guard your house though. It will kiss the burglars when they arrive, show them where the valuables are and wag its tail while they are stealing them.
I would like a dog again. - devonite
Here you go! - fits the following criteria:
1.Laptop size for pettin
2.Friendly, lively little chaps - hours of fun!
3.Hairless, so not much grooming
4.Hairless, so no more de-doghairing your trouser legs or sofa.
5. Rather "puffy- lookin" dogs, so wouldn`t mind a "fluffy"name!
6. easy to keep clean!

Mostly in show dogs. Dogs bred for working trials and working competitions are usually very good.

Show breeders have all but destroyed the UK German Shepherd breed stock.

If I was going to buy a puppy, my breed of choice would be

An English Curly Coat retriever

or Possibly an English Cocker, tho its a bit small for me.

A way out choice if I could get one would be a Portuguese Water Dog. *IF* I could get one!!!!

The Aussie breeds are good solid dogs, but need a lot of exercise - Kelpie, Catttle dogs, etc

I would like a dog again. - Zero
And yes, bitches every time unless you need a dog for sporting reasons. A spayed bitch if you are not breeding from it.
I would like a dog again. - Meldrew
Portuguese Water Dog - fantastic! The breed was dying out in Portugal but the security forces took them on and they are being bred and used as sniffer dogs. I went to visit the kennels. Extract from wiki says

The Portuguese Water Dog is a breed of working dog as classified by the American Kennel Club. Portuguese Water Dogs are originally from the Portuguese region of the Algarve, from where the breed expanded to all around Portugal's coast, where they were taught to herd fish into fishermen's nets, to retrieve lost tackle or broken nets, and to act as couriers from ship to ship, or ship to shore. Portuguese Water Dogs rode in bobbing fishing trawlers as they worked their way from the warm Atlantic waters of Portugal to the frigid fishing waters off the coast of Iceland where the fleets caught cod to bring home. Portuguese Water Dogs were often taken with sailors during the Portuguese discoveries

It doesn't mention that they have tails with a sort of fluffy pompom on the end so that they can be more easily seen when swimming.

Do they dye the Pom-Pom lifejacket orange?

It is often possible to get a puppy from a rescue centre. My younger collie was only about 3-4 months old when we got him from Battersea. My friend has a small dog which was born at the rescue centre after the mother was picked up as a stray and not claimed - probably thrown out as she was pregnant. The pups look as though they are pure breeds.

The Labradoodles others mention (mongrels really!) are very expensive around here!
I would like a dog again. - Dog
>>The Labradoodles others mention (mongrels really!)<<

Grrrrr! (Crossbred) n' butta.
I would like a dog again. - Zero
A labradoodle is a fashion designer dog. I kind of object to it on those principals alone.

Plus the fact its taken the worse part of both breeds and joined them together. Soppy hairy stupid dopes they are mainly.

Greyhounds are peacefull couple doors away the neighbour had one.Must be a dog what doesn;t get nervous around children.Going to have grandchildren in the future very inportant no biting.

>> get nervous around children.Going to have grandchildren in the future very inportant no biting.

In that case you need a Labrador Retriever. Preferably one bred for field trials, not show. A small bitch.

It is, without doubt, the best temperament for the home. The sweetest gentlest dog, and 100% safe with kids.

Need to be very strict with its diet tho - it would eat until it exploded. Which makes them great to train they will learn anything using the treat reward method.
I would like a dog again. - Dutchie
Labrador Retriever is that a crossbred between a Labrador and Retriever? I know it sounds obvious how old is the breed.?
I would like a dog again. - ToMoCo
It's just the proper name for a Labrador.

Retriever being, I guess, that it was originally a working gun dog - from Labrador. Hundreds of years old.

Eat till it exploded.>) Our old cat Lina is like that she is always eating begging me for food.I know I do wrong but I haven't the hart not to feed her.Sounds a lovely dog the Labardor Retriever.
I would like a dog again. - Dutchie
They have a lovely caracter Dog thanks.
 I would like a dog again. - R.P.
Get a rescue dog - these rescue centres are struggling under the weight of austerity abandonments - a good old mongeral mutt - worth their weight on gold. The Working Cocker is re-homed - he has slight "issues" which have got better since we got the Springer. I'd have a poodle any day of the week - they don't loose their hair and a fiercely loyal.
I would like a dog again. - CGNorwich
Our cat is re-homed. Not sure what re-home dogs are like but would never get another re-homed cat. Now in its fourteenth year of ankle biting hissing unsociability. Can't even pick the wretched thing up without holding the back of its neck so it can't bite. Not sure why we keep the thing really. Sort of feel obliged to look after it.
I would like a dog again. - Dutchie
Iam laughing Norwich put it in the pan makes a nice soup.>:)
I would like a dog again. - Meldrew
And then a nice pair of slippers or a Davy Crockett hat!
I would like a dog again. - CGNorwich
By the time we pay for food vet bills and cattery fees when on holiday I reckon it has cost me over £8,000 to date. Should have bought a Panda.
 I would like a dog again. - R.P.
Should have bought a Panda.

Maybe Rattle will sell you his !

Hoping for a swap. Sure he would like Maggie the cat.

IT probably didn't want to go home with you either CG:)

Much nicer young girls working in the kennels that understood and spoiled it!

>> Get a rescue dog - these rescue centres are struggling under the weight of austerity

Yup, I would love a breed of choice, but when FiFi pegs out I cant morally justify one when rescue homes are full of dogs, and I know I can rehome and do good things with a rescue.

I'd have a poodle any day of the week - they don't loose
>> their hair and a fiercely loyal.

Great great dogs are standard poodles (not the miniature or toy). Loyal, Intelligent, high drive, fun, friendly and giving - Loads of confidence and attitude. The hair is high maintenance.
I would like a dog again. - Dutchie
I understand about rescue homes.I have been there in the past but Iam a bit of a coward seeing these animals looking at me wanting a home.Pat is right they are well looked after and cared for.
I would like a dog again. - Pat
Just go with an open mind Dutchie, no preconceptions of what you want.

There will be one who cowers at the back of the pen, so scared to come and see you and you'll know it's been badly teated and needs to be loved and cared for again.

That'll be the one.

Pat
I would like a dog again. - Dutchie
Thats how we got Molly Pat lovely cat like I said follows me everywhere.

Anyway I hope you get your car sorted out or else (slapping) >:)
I would like a dog again. - Pat
;) @ Dutchie!

We had a labrador many years ago now from kennels who acted just like that.
He was gunshy and had been beaten to try and make him do what he was told.

I only went to get a small dog and came home with Thomas on the back seat...he gave us much love over the next 12 years and I never regretted taking him home.

Pat

>>There will be one who cowers at the back of the pen, so scared to come and see you and you'll know it's been badly teated<<

That's asking for trouble in my (painful) experience.

Shame to see good dogs destroyed if people don't want them
I would like a dog again. - Clk Sec
>>Should have bought a Panda

Not possible, they're an endangered species. And, it's unlikely you'd get your hands on enough bamboo to feed it.

Could even be less friendly than the mog.
I would like a dog again. - legacylad
Border Terriers are very hardy little dogs...Alf Wright kept them (aka J Herriott).
So too Lakelands, Wire Haired Fox & Welsh terriers.
Somewhat larger are Airedales.
All just big softies with the proper care & attention and a lovely temperament.
I would like a dog again. - legacylad
Forgot to say there are rescue & rehoming centres for specific breeds. My ex in laws got a lovely pair of twin brother Westies from one such when their last Westie passed away. They had been kept indoors for all their short lives, a bungalow...and had never experienced stairs before. Once they got the hang of them they were up & down like rats up a drainpipe.Amusing to watch but not very good from a training point of view!

westies? terriers? nasty snappy little dogs, unfriendly, selfish, horrid little things.

My dad had miniature poodles when we were kids, we loved them, they weren't clipped in the traditional ways but I loved them all....

Working Cocker Dutchie, all the benefits of a Cocker in a slightly bigger dog, fast, agile, obedient (well...) and a manageable size
I would like a dog again. - legacylad
All three working Cockers I know are slightly mad.As R.P. rightly says they are fast, agile & obedient. My neighbour regularly has to carry his home when he goes out shooting. It just runs itself until it drops down exhausted. Still a smasher though.
 I would like a dog again. - R.P.
I know where the term "dogged" comes from now...he'll fire up from a deep sleep - I used to walk him in the early hours when sleep eluded me, he cared not. Cracking dog. Remarkably alert, he's waiting for Mrs RP to come home now - he's got to recognise her new car in a few days.
I would like a dog again. - Dutchie
Terry the Irish Terrier we had was a nice chap.Very peacfull used to like long walks never got tired.

Problem was he always liked a battle fearless of any dog.

Cocker Spaniels are my favourites. I have two, an old man, Benjie, of fourteen years and a youngster, Henry, sixteen months.
