 Domestic drains question ~ update - L'escargot
The head honcho visited this afternoon and agreed that the final section of the drain wasn't satisfactory. In fact he freely told me that the building inspector wouldn't pass it in its present state. The workmen are going to come again next Monday, dig it all up and re-lay the pipe. For my peace of mind I've asked for another manhole to be installed ~ obviously at my expense ~ just before the pipe connects to the sewer lateral. I'll then be able to satisfy myself that the gradient is correct, and also if there is ever a blockage in the lateral (which is the responsibility of the local water authority) I will know it's in their bit of the system and not in mine.

mguires rule of thumb..... 4" pipe requires a fall of 1 in 40 gradiant , 6" pipe requires 1 in 60 fall..... etc etc self cleansing velocity i think it was called?

Thanks zookeeper. Here's what I found about gradients of drains. tinyurl.com/7huyb99

The contractor's head honcho said that the gradient might be right but the pipe might be bowed downwards downstream of the manhole. All will be revealed (I hope!) when they remove the soil and gravel above the pipe next Monday.
