I think the LTA must be close to the MOD, in terms of outlay versus results!

I see that 5 of the 6 lady competitors at the Australian have lost in the first round.

"Tim Henman, Greg Rusedski, and Andy Murray are the only British men who have been ranked inside the top 50 in the past twenty years, and of those, only Henman was brought through the LTA junior set-up (and he came from a tennis family that organised much of his development themselves), with Rusedski learning his tennis in Canada, and Murray moving to Barcelona at the age of 15 to train at the Sánchez-Casal Academy in Barcelona.

A parliamentary All-Party Tennis Group was highly critical of the LTA, stating that 'given the remarkable level of expenditure, in excess of £60m annually, it should be possible to deliver better outcomes than at present' Elena Baltacha and Anne Keothavong are the only British women to make the top fifty in recent years, but neither has made the top forty, and the latter has been publicly critical of the LTA's role in her development."

It is the LTA's money and a lot of it is profits from Wimbledon and the Government puts some in but is a poor return on the outlay

It's a boring game.

Much of prior criticism was aimed at local tennis clubs.. more social venues than tennis clubs and youngsters actively discouraged....in favour of the more mature members wanting to play.

Tim Henman is the most dedicated though, as he used to practice from the age of five against the garage door.

The door used to win in straight sets of course.

I watch tennis from time to time, Nadal v Federer or Dokovich, but it is so disjointed. If you can't get the ball over the net first serve you get another (try introducing that for penalties in soccer or rugger!). The balls only last for 7 games, a player has to wipe his/her face between every rally. Two minutes rest at frequent intervals. Two people playing need how many officials? An Umpire, 6 line judges, 4 ball people

Same with rugby, little flow of play, stoppages, complicated rules, throw ins, scrums etc. Is there 20 minutes of "play" in a 40 minute half?

Why should I be eviscerated for not liking the no 2 apple of mrs madf's eye? Murray has made himself very fit and is playing better tennis but all this gurning and punching the air and "distressed" hairstyle ins't my style and I am surprised many women like it

No worse than football, 20odd overpaid primadonnas chasing a ball around a field and kissing each other when they get it through the gate at the end of the field.

"Overpaid primadonnas".

A Murray earned $4.4M in 2009 despite not winning a grandsalm.. That certainly qualifies him for the title.

Nadal earned $6.4M in the same year.

I think it's still (right or wrong) seen as a bit of a posh boys game. Lack of media outside a couple of weeks in the summer doesn't help.

Very few people in any work or career "earn" or can justify a 6 figure salary. They are paid it which isn't quite the same thing.
