i have need to install an extirior door in a covered walk way between kitchen and outboulding.
the gap is 1200mm so a lot wider than a door.
i have a spare upvc outside door but no frame.
is it ok to make a frame from softwood and hinge the door off of that or do i need to install a premade frame for the door and just fill in around the door with paneling etc

You'll probably need a 5 / 7 point locking set and then the rebates in the frame will need a bit of precise carpentry. Maybe a local shop can knock up a UPVC frame for you - that's where I'd start first.

Anything at all can be cobbled out of new or recycled timber, or usually a mixture of both, with a bit of thought before you start (but you have to keep thinking as few projects go exactly to plan). Of course everything depends on the visual and practical effect you want.
Can't stand plastic doors and windows myself, however practical they may be. They are just as bad as the noisy plywood carp inexplicably installed in our gaff during its refurbishment.

i think it maybe easier to get a wooden door and frame all in one and then build a timber support for the frame to it into.
