I despise them all, but none more than Slade's merry Christmas.
As soon as you hear the first bars of that song, sometime around late November, you know its going to get pounded into your head by every musical source for the next two months.

Indeed, they played it on Saturday at the usual rock club, the audience aged between 18 and 50 all really loved it. Mind you most Pogues are great to sing along to after you've had a few....

A forum always has a Scrooge :). I quite like that the song as a song, but I agree it is over played and gets in your head. I try and counter it by playing Cum Feel the Noise at this time of year.
Personally I think some of the best Christmas songs are the carols, so much nicer than all the cheesy pop stuff.

The Pogues/ Kirsty McCall by a country mile.
A few others are worth a listen. Yesterday's Sounds of the Seventies included the Bowie/Crosby rendering of Drummer Boy; a twee old song but brilliantly rendered.

guilty secret of Xmas song I quite like is "stay another day" By East 17, but concur The Pogues is really good as is Happy XMAS (War is over)-by John Lennon

Christmas Time, by The Darkness.
I must also confess to a softspot for the Mariah Carey number mentioned by the op, but that is because I have been singing it so much lately with this lot: www.rockchoir.com/home.html

Favourite Carol is NKC singing O Holy Night - just can't beat it. That is what Christmas means to me.
Favourite Christmas Song? That's more difficult - I like the gimmicky ones like the Wombles but also like A Spaceman Came Travelling from Chris De Burgh.
Another question on the same theme is - what is the most recent Christmas song that will be in the "list of Christmas songs" for years to come? Most recent I can think of is East 17's Stay Another Day and even then, it is not in the Slade / Wizzard league?

Stille Nacht. Has the advantage of not being a plastic Irish song. The censor does realise that every mention of the pogues is a back-handed reference to their original name?

At son's school carol service last week one of the carols was Stille Nacht. Fortunately they printed the words in the programme, and with my one year of school German I just about struggled through the first verse.
But I was finding the second verse hard going - couldn't work out the pronunciations. Then half way through I realised that the second verse was in French.

As a member of the school choir (BFPO 45) in Berlin we were asked to sing Stille Nacht to residents of an old peoples home. In German. Judging by the mahogany facial expressions, English army brats singing to elderly, probably punctilious, Germans in their own language was maybe not very well judged.

>> The Pouges fairy tale of New York,
Saw a cracking version of this on TV yesterday - the real Shane MacGowan partnered by, er, a Beluga whale. Surreal, and very funny: www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFRWC53bgKM
(Programme is a year old so apologies if posted before.)
